‘Eagles’ fly away with all three points
Sending off and missed golden opportunities…
A sunny Saturday afternoon and a crowd of 137 saw an even game where the ‘Scholars’ again created self inflicted wounds to let all three points slip away.
A cagey opening ten minutes before the home side started to see more of the ball and become more threatening.
Omar Vassell played in a ball that Eoin Casey took a shot on the turn but straight at the keeper. Garry Jones then played in Joe Bennett but his shot was straight at the keeper.
Then Chris Doyle was on the line to clear a corner.
The ‘Scholars’ should have gone ahead when Ryan Forde played Rob Hastings down the middle and through on the keeper but his tame shot was easily gathered by the keeper.
Hastings and Bennett combined to play in Doyle who thunderous shot from the edge of the box pole axed Casey for which he need the physio. Then Billy Adcock had a rasping shot from just outside the box that went past the left hand post.
Half time arrived with no goals but the home side had looked the more likely and more deserving to have broken the deadlock.
Within minutes of the restart Rob Hastings was played through the middle again but the keeper parried his effort.
On 54 mins the game changed when Billy Adcock went in for tackle but his studs were showing and the player was injured and the referee deemed it a red card offence.
This changed the game as the opposition for the first time sense they could now go on to win the game.
But the home side continued to push forward. Bennett nearly played in Casey on goal. Then Vassell shot wide from the edge of the box.
The visitors made substitutions that brightened up their forward play and soon the home defence was defending stoutly.
From a corner Ryan Forde was fouled in the box but the ref played 'the advantage' but his shot went over the bar...
Ashley Nathaniel-George replaced Hastings to endeavour to give the attack more options.
But on 79 mins a goal came for the 'Eagles' when a move down the right saw the ball into Lee Roache who made no mistake.
It was now hard work to get back into the game for the home side but they kept plugging away.
But the points were wrapped up on 88 mins when Lee Roache cut in from the right - beating two defenders - and firing home into the left hand corner of the net.
A game of ‘what ifs’ and ‘maybes’ – but a seventh home defeat – our Achilles heel…
‘The Scholars’ drop to 9th and nine points off the play off places with five league games remaining.
