U18s Beat Welling United to progress in Cup
U18s come from a goal down to beat Welling United
The Scholars U18s played the AFA Challenge Cup Quarter Final match at home against Welling United, from the Youth Alliance League, on Saturday.
The game started with PBT quickly establishing control of the ball and retaining possession. With players missing through injury the management team had the chance to field players that have not had much football so far in the league and also those finally returning from long term injuries. Although it was a new look line up you would not have known, the way the boys controlled the game. Welling were organised and had some good ability players but it was PBT creating the chances. Two clearances off the line by last ditch defending kept PBT at bay, along with the keeper making a couple of good saves. Finally PBT thought they had scored only for the linesman's flag to go up (correctly) for offside. Then the sucker punch Welling went forward on one of their attacks just before the final whistle and a tackle brought down the forward, Penalty. It was duly converted 1-0 Welling United. Within a minute it was half time.
Second half and more of the same, PBT pressing and controlling possession and Welling looking dangerous on the break. Then on 60 mins we were awarded a penalty. 1-1. The goalkeeper made a string of really good saves. Then Welling managed to get away and the long shot was well saved by the PBT keeper and pushed over for a corner. Eventually the pressure told and PBT scored a second and then a very unfortunate mistake by the otherwise excellent keeper, let a shot through at the near post to make it 3-1 to PBT.
The game finished 3-1 and so PBT are through to the Semi Final of the AFA Saturday Challenge Cup. We await the draw to see who our opponents will be.
