Ian Musty, 29, has taken over from Andre Duffus as the captain of Poulton Cricket Club for the 2012 season. Originally putting himself forward for the vice-captain role, Ian was persuaded to take over as captain by chairman Dave Dunn as the club look to bounce back from the disappointment of relegation from GCCL Division 1 last year.
Jody Lawrence, who only turns 20 midway through the season, will be vice-captain as Poulton start to reap the rewards of their successful youth system.
Musty has set out his cricketing philosophy, stating "I'm hoping to bring a more prominent sense of fun and enjoyment this year. I would like every player to enjoy his saturday afternoon at cricket. I don't want batsmen worrying about HAVING to make 40 runs each before they have even walked to the wicket."
Ian is keen to promote the younger players into the 1st-XI on merit, to supplement the older heads of the team, and has also identified a desire to get more players from the 20-30 age bracket to the club. Poulton has suffered over recent years with many of their best young players leaving the area to go to university or to work, and Musty is working hard on bringing in some fresh talent to the club during the close season.
Another area that Musty and the rest of the PCC committee will be improving on for 2012 is the link between the senior players and the junior set-up. There have already been talks about setting up a 'mentoring' scheme for each age group, involving senior players mentoring young cricketers and hopefully inspiring them to one day want to play for the 1st XI.
Musty himself started out for Poulton at the age of 12 and was a prodigious talent, getting his first taste of 1st-XI cricket at the tender age of 13. He hopes to inspire more young Poulton cricketers to follow suit.
