Prenton 1st XV vs Old Bedians 1st XV Match Report

6 days ago By David Ball

Report by Paul Cotgrave

This Week Prenton hosted Old Bedians who looking at the league table were pushing for promotion & in fine form. With Prenton down at the wrong end of the table this on paper looked like an easy day for the visitors. However recent weeks & some new & old players back in the shirt has seen an improvement in our attitude, performance & resilliance on the pitch.
We got off to our all to common slow start & conceded a try in the first 5mins 0-7 down. Not long after MTH slotted a penalty 3-7 & back in the game. However we are still guilty of coughing up the ball to easily & again in this game we dropped or turned over ball after almost every restart. So at 3-7 down we handed the ball back to Bedians from the restart & not long after they scored again 3-14 to Bedians & only about 15mins gone. At this point it looked like we could be in for a long afternoon. But as previously mentioned we are also stating improve, so we hung in there & slowly started to get back in the game. Bedians wanted to play the more expansive game & move the ball & lot more & Prenton had the bigger physical pack & played the more direct route (we can still play direct but lets & try to pass the ball at least twice). Bedians struggling to cope with our bigger forwards, so we began to secure ball at the set piece, keep possession & gain territory the rewards being a show & go from Knappo & under the posts converted by MTH 10-14 & then & then 2 MTH pens to swing the score 16-14 to Prenton. Bedians slotting a pen with the last kick of the half to making it 16-17 to Bedians but it was now game on & all to play for in the 2nd half.
First score of the 2nd half went to Prenton fullback MTH going over from a well worked move from the base of the scrum 21-17 Prenton. Not long after a potential turning point of the game??? at 21-17 with Prenton deep into the 22 Bedians got a 2nd row sin binned, choices being do you 1) Take 3 points go 7 points ahead & get the ball back from the restart or 2) Go for the kill, we had been pushing them back in the scrum, they just had a 2nd row binned, if we get a converted try we go 11 points in the lead & doubtful if Bedians could recover from that potential deficit. We went for option 2 battered the Bedians line but credit to them the managed to keep us out (in hind sight these are always easy calls to make). So being the ding dong game this was turning into it was Bedians who managed to gain the ball, territory & up & into the Prenton 22 for another score 21-22 to Bedians. An MTH penalty put Prenton back in front 24-22 Prenton. With only minutes remaining disaster struck, Prenton in the Bedians 22 pushing the scrum back (again) & Bedians back rower (some say illegally) picked the ball out the scrum & popped to the centre who burst up the pitch, the scrambling defence got back but now all pressure was on Prenton to keep Bedians out. Unfortunately for us we didnt manage this & Bedians scored again, although this was a contentious score as it appeared the Bedians try scorer dropped the ball in the act of scoring??? With only the restart left & no time left on the clock the game was Bedians Final Score 24-27
A great game to watch & am sure a great game to play in, gutted the boys didnt get the win but when your down the bottom the 50/50 breaks dont seem to go your way. But lets not feel sorry for ourselves recent performances have shown we have the players to be competitive & win games, so lets stick together & start to turn the results in our favour starting with Newton le Willows this Saturday. We must have the confidence that we do have the ability & players to win this game.
