Ellesmere Port vs Prenton
Match Report by Paul Cotgrave
With the 1st team struggling for recognised 1st team players & the Academics fine form seen this weeks fixtures being reversed. The Academics playing Ellesmere Port 1s & Prenton 1s playing Sefton 2s & not forgetting Prenton 3s who where also playing a league fixture against Wirral 4s. The aim being 3x wins, a confidence boost for all, at least 2x wins, definitely 1x win & the chance of losing all 3x would be about the same odds as seeing someone down a bottle of wine in 1. Well for those involved or at the club on Saturday we all know what happened!
Academics overran by the bigger more physical Ellesmere Port side, 1s loosing with the last kick of the game & the 3s facing a large squad of Wirral players as the Wirral 2s had no game. So sport being sport things didnt work out as planned! & yes a Wirral prop downed a bottle of wine in 1.
Reports from the 1st team game up at Ellesmere Port tell of a strong Port side racing into a big 1st half lead, however the Academics getting to grips with the game & winning the the 2nd half with some good play & tries scored. Well done boys & thanks for helping the club out & dont let this result dent your confidence your still on for a great season.
The 3s with some new players got out gunned by Wirral but played to the end & scored some tries, so well done boys keep going.
The 1s as last week lost the game in the final moments. Last week with a penalty 5m from the try line on the last play we ran wide & when our bigger forwards had been running over the smaller opposition all game. This week after a below par 1st half, slow reaction times, not playing to the whistle, a sin binning & a miss firing set piece we found ourselves 15 points behind at the break 12-27 to Sefton. After the half time chat & attacking the Clubhouse in the 2nd period we upped the tempo started running with much more purpose & moved the ball. This led to all the possession & territory to Prenton, 2x excellent tries from James Gale & Joey Fisher plus 2x cons & a penalty from James we had made up the 15 point deficit & were now 2 points in the lead 29-27 to Prenton. Sefton looked out on their feet & had only been in the Prenton 22 once in the second period. Credit to the players for pulling the game around, now with the last play of the game & in possession we just needed to get the ball off the pitch. unfortunatley we choose to keep playing, give up the ball & then a penalty. So with time up & the last kick of the game the Sefton 15 from 40 meters out off centre of the posts against he wind he took the kick at goal, as much as it pains me to say it, it was a good kick & although it only cleared the bar by inches over it went & 3 points & a Sefton win. Final Score Prenton 29-30 Sefton
No problem making mistakes, we will all make mistakes next week, players, refs, coaches. What we need to do is remember & learn from our mistakes, remember what works & keep doing it, more frequent good decisions will improve our individual & team performances.
