New Brighton 3s vs Prenton Academics (02/09/2017)

Match Report by Barry Miller

The Academics took to the field against New Brighton on Saturday in their first league game of the coming campaign. A lot of the students were still away working before University has started so Prenton kindly filled the ranks supplying 7 quality players. At 15.00 the Academics had the bare 15 and we thank New Brighton Rugby club for offering us players if we ran short, as the game got underway two more players appeared.
The game was going to be a very physical affair as New Brighton had assembled a strong 2/3’s team with some strong ball carriers. The Academics were the first to score and held their own against some strong runners in the New Brighton team. Territory was key to the game and the Academics managed to keep New Brighton pinned back with a mix of running a kicking for territory. The set piece was working well also in the first half. As the first half came to a close the Academics led 19-0.
As the second half kicked off New Brighton threw everything at the Academics and broke their defence several times before eventually scoring. Realising they were now in a game the Academics defence came back into its own, and they started hitting New Brighton hard and turning solid defence into attack. They would go on to score a further 19 points this half and New Brighton gained another try.
Everyone put their bodies on the line several injuries were received, as games go on the team can only become stronger through playing together and squad depth increasing. To many names to mention the match reports will become more detailed as the weeks go on a job for a journalism student perhaps? The Chester University lads played their hearts out and so did Prenton lads. The game ended 36-10 to the Academics lots to build on for Saturday’s game against Merseyside police.
