Prenton 3rd XV vs Oxton Parkonians 2s
Match Report by Paul Cotgrave
3rd Team arrived at our local rivals Oxton Parkonians with the bare 15. After an open consultation we decided on our positions as although we had 15 not many would go on to play in their recognised positions. Oxton Parkonians 2nd team looked strong with a squad of 20 including a number of last season’s 1st team. Prenton 3s got off to a terrible start conceding 2 tries within the first 5 minutes. The terrible start didn’t get much better with some wayward kicking from the Prenton backs just kept giving the ball away to the opposition & inviting pressure & continues attacks. Gradually Prenton 3s finally began to get a foothold into the game mostly down to a sterling performance from the Prenton pack who began to gain dominance at the scrum winning ball against the head & winning scrum penalties. Prenton 3s finished the half firmly on top but only had the 1 try from James Gale scored from a cross field kick to show for all our efforts. Half time 12-7 to Parkonians
The Second half unfortunately started like the first with Prenton again conceding 2 quick tries. Prenton numbers were boosted in the 2nd half with Captain Andy Gale finally getting to the game after being caught up in work. Again like the first half Prenton 3s worked our way into the game & scoring a try through the backs from Woodsy. Prenton backs looked the much quicker throughout the game but often the last required pass not going to hand points were squandered. As the game wore on & Parkonians having the luxury of rolling on & off 5 subs throughout the game Prenton3s began to tire conceding more tries. Although on the wrong end of the score line & a lot of tried bodies we challenged ourselves to get a try which was achieved by winger James Gale picking up his 2nd try of the game & the last try of the match after a fine break from the Prenton Backs. Cannot fault the effort from the Prenton 3s. Although game rusty, players playing out of position & against strong opposition we kept going until the end. If this set of players can keep on playing as often as possible mixed in with players who are due to return to make the group stronger the 3s will be on for a good season.
