Long Travel Award

The Lads from the Dell traveled well..

Prenton 3s boosted by a small contingent of 1st teamers headed off to Tarleton to what I think maybe the first ever meeting between the 2 clubs. Arriving a good 30mins before kick-off Tarleton were already in full warm up mode & looked a good 3rd team outfit with a good mix of young & old. Game kicked off & a fully fired up Tarleton took the game to Prenton, the Prenton defence stood firm & were thoroughly tested as Tarleton had all the early ball & territory attacking with both forwards & backs. Prenton absorbed a lot of pressure but did finally manage a surge up field through some good forward work but this ended in a sin binning for Jorden Burley due to a violent reaction from getting the ball knocked out of his hands when he looked odds on to score. The penalty & being a man down presented Tarleton with more possession & territory. Against the run of play Prenton scored after some quick thinking & handling from the Prenton Half Backs, Rob Seabury went clean through from 40 out & scored. Rob also slotting the conversion. Tarleton carried on where they left off with the 1 man advantage & the majority of possession & territory. When Prenton finally got the ball winger Dan Woods scored a great individual try again from 40 out by beating a couple of defenders & then winning the sprint from a kick through, conversion missed. Now back up to 15 players & 12-0 up things looking good for the Prenton side only for Sean Asp to be sin binned just before ½ time for an illegal no arms tackle.

With the 2nd half kicking off more fresh legs from the bench were sent on to help rotate the forwards, Sam Johnston had already been sent on in the 1st half, Lee Raff started the 2nd & once the sin bin timer expired Knappo was also introduced into the game. The subs helped maintain the Prenton defence as Tarleton never gave in. Tarleton were probably guilty of a bit too much lateral running & committed lots of players to the break down. Prenton maintained our defensive line & shape by not over committing at the break down, stayed on our feet & this meant we often had more defenders than they had attackers which puts the odds in our favour. The Tarleton attacks would either end up with a mistake by them or a turn over to Prenton as they would run out of Players due to the high numbers they had at the previous break downs. Credit to Tarleton they tried everything, a stoppage in play due to an injury on the 1st team Pitch allowed players from that game to join ours & help the Tarleton 3s cause. 1 big forward who joined the Tarleton 3s side even had the shorts & socks of Tarleton’s 2nd team opposition. Even so for all their endeavour they only had a 3 point Penalty on the scoreboard. Despite the effort they had not really threated Prenton’ s try line in the 2nd period & when Lee Raff crashed over from close range & James Gale slotted the conversion & penalty the game was won. Prenton 3s were much the stronger side as the game went on & late in the game Nathan Mc finished a fine backs move from forward set piece, James Gale converted. They only thing left of the game was for the Ref to award 4 last play of the game penalties which led to Tarleton getting a consolation try from a 5m line out.

Big thanks to all the lads who travelled & the 1st teamers who tagged along, hope everyone enjoyed. The score would have been a lot closer without the extra help & a match day squad of 19. Great team effort from backs & forwards, everyone had to dig deep, weathered the early pressure & gradually turned the game around to fine away win. On this evidence I don’t think many teams will get an away win here at Tarleton they were not a bad side & Prenton 3s 1-19 played well. Sam Johnno had a great game when he came on & did what open sides are meant to do (hassle the opposition to death & win all loose ball) Chris Sing a great game at 9, threat with the ball & a sky high tackle count without.
