50 Up As PL Go Marching On
Following last week’s uncharacteristic lacklustre performance, Preston Lodge were looking to bounce back in style against Hawick Linden on Saturday and normal service was resumed with some exciting rugby that brought eight tries without reply.
In a match that was reduced to about 60 minutes due to a Hawick Linden player sustaining an injury which thankfully, turned out to be not as serious as had first been feared, PL played with a degree of confidence right from the kick off that the home side just could not contain. When they gained possession in the 22 following the opening kick off, the PL pack set the ball back nicely to Greg Leitch who in turn passed on to Andrew Clark. The stand off then cleverly delayed his pass to get behind the on-rushing defence and this created enough space to allow slick passing through the back line before Aaron Welsh sent the final, scoring pass to Dougie Thomson who was able to run in almost unopposed and successfully finish off a fine move.
The second try came in the 13th minute when ever lively prop forward, Stuart McLean broke clear with the ball before passing to Darren Eales and the youngster was unstoppable on his way to scoring under the posts. Greg Kinross added the first of his five conversions to make the score a comfortable 0-12 and it was the full back’s skilfully delayed pass that allowed Thomson the easiest of tasks to nip in for his own second and PL’s third try, just a few minutes later.
The match was entirely one sided as the Linden pack struggled to match up against their opponents and their only chance for points during the half was a shot at goal which drifted wide. The PL pressure was relentless and the rest of the first half tries were scored by Keith Duncan who got two from close range and one from Andrew Clark who slipped two tackles on his way to the line.
With the scoreboard showing 0-36 at the break, the PL support could afford to relax and enjoy the rugby as their side’s 9th try scoring bonus point of the season was already secured. Two more tries would come during the first 10 minutes of the second half when firstly Thomson found himself clear with the ball and he then passed to Clark who had no trouble in bagging his second. And finally it was Thomson, who had moved in to scrum half and he again burst clear at great pace before finding support from the back row in the shape of Paul Voy and Andrew Archer who comfortably finished off the move.
It was at this point the Linden prop suffered a neck injury at a scrum and quite rightly, caution took precedence and the Captains agreed to end the game to allow the player to be properly treated and taken to hospital where he was later found to have a broken collar bone and a trapped nerve.
The final score was 0-50 in favour of PL and they will hope to pick up from where they left off when they face local rivals Ross High at The Pennypit on Saturday. Kick off 2pm.
