Preston Lodge’s amazing record of taking a bonus point from every game so far this season remained intact after only 20 minutes of play at The Pennypit on Saturday.

Forrester were the visitors but they could not stop the onslaught of power from the PL pack that brought 13 tries during the game and saw a series of milestones reached to ensure the home side stay at the top of the league on maximum points.
Forrester kicked off but an immediate break from youngster Paul Glynn on PL’s right wing set up a good attacking position for the home side. The visitors conceded a penalty in their desperation to get the ball and a quick tap set up the opportunity to pass the ball through the hands until it got to Paul Voy and he made no mistake from close range. The blustery, swirling wind would make life difficult for the kickers throughout the afternoon but PL were happy with the 5-0 lead after only 2 minutes.
Voy was to be the star of the show during the early exchanges and he managed to bag his hat-trick of tries in only 17 minutes as his strength and power could not be harnessed by the young Forrester defence. Dougie Naismith helped set up the second try by offloading after breaking loose in the 22 and this in fact was PL’s 100th try of the season. They are the only team in Scotland to have achieved this milestone this season. And then Darren Eales put in a strong run before sending a scoring pass to Voy for the third. Andrew Clark managed a conversion but at 17-0, the rest of the game was going to be all about entertaining rugby and tries galore.
The second quarter of the game was to be the most torrid for the beleaguered Forrester defence as they could do nothing to stop the constant flow of attacks as PL hit top form. The try scoring bonus point was secured in the 22nd minute when Eales shrugged off several would be tacklers to sprint home from 40 metres and then Raymond Mackie, another of last season’s Colts side broke clear to score the fifth following good passing down the left between Arron Hay, who was making his debut for the 1st XV and Dougie Thomson.
Greg Leitch did his bit for the half backs’ reputation when he gathered the ball at the base of the scrum on the Forrester 22 and he ran in unopposed to make 34-0 after half an hour.
More trouble would follow for Forrester s the restart kick went straight to Mackie and he had only the try line on his mind as he went on a solo run all the way to grab his second.
It wasn’t until the 38th minute that Forrester managed to get into the PL half with any sort of decent possession but there was nothing they could do with it. In fact, PL were able to win the ball back easily and when Leitch set off down the left it looked like he could go all the way but instead, he unselfishly passed the ball back inside to Hay and he was clear to score. The halftime scoreboard showed 44-0 which entirely reflected PL’s superiority over their mid-table opponents.

The second half started in the same way as the first, with Paul Voy scoring a fourth try – this time following a pick up at the back of the scrum and a few minutes later, Darren Eales scored his second which Greg Leitch managed to convert to make the score 56-0. This was the second important milestone of the afternoon because it took PL to a massive 700 points for the season in this, their 14th game.
Thankfully for Forrester, PL took their foot off the gas for the next 20 minutes but there was still no way through for the visitors even though Douglas and Sisson managed to put together a passage of entertaining rugby.
The final 3 tries were scored first by a battling Dougie Naismith, then Andrew Clark was the recipient after Leitch had stolen the ball. The final try, in the 73rd minute, was one of the best though after Eales broke away on the half way line before calmly sending the scoring pass to Blair Robertson. The young centre is only 17 years old and this was just reward for a very mature performance in the midfield throughout the afternoon.
Leitch and Chris Dixon had managed two second half conversions so the final score was a very impressive 73-0.

PL travel to second placed Duns next Saturday for probably the biggest and hardest game of the season but they go In the knowledge that a win will mean that they are crowned league champions. Kick off 2pm.
