And, it was a thrilling finish!
The Nationals, who went 2-0-1 in pool play advanced to the finals Sunday evening. Playing against a good Edina, Minnesota Sting team the game featured a consistent element from the entire weekend.
The wind.
In the first half, the Nationals had numerous shots on goal including a Mady Myers screamer from 40 yards out that the Edina goalkeeper was able to deflect over the goal. With Edina's direct play, neither team was able to find much of a rhythm but both teams pressured well.
The second half found the Nationals defending a fierce wind. But, the girls were able to tough it out and keep the ball in front of them on the way to a scoreless draw at the end of regulation.
In the shootout, the Nationals were the more relaxed group and were able to bury 3 kicks. Bri Saunders was able to parry away two of Edina's shots and when their final effort sailed high, the Nationals won 3-2.
