A mixed bag over the weekend, with a point on Saturday against old foes Trinity and a victory on Sunday against fellow title challengers SWAG.
Saturday we welcomed Trinity to a Tolworth pitch that was windier than a mule’s ass after a 3am Tuesday night visit to Far Pavs. We started the game with the wind behind us in an attempt to play on Trinity’s confidence following their recently dreadful form and opened the game smartly, forcing Trinity into giving foul after foul and corner after corner to us with the deadlock eventually broken by Matty M straight from the corner. Several more chances fell our way, however as in our previous two games we didn’t make them count and went in just the 1 goal up at half time. Second half and Trinity now had the wind, using it well in an attempt to turn our defence who held strong. When we could get the ball down we looked threatening and with 5 to go it looked to be game over with a penalty given our way; alas we missed and from the resulting goal kick the ball was flicked to their offside striker who finished well, with the ref deciding that the flick was one of our players. 1-1 the final score, a sucker punch at the end from a referee we’ve previously requested to not referee our games for this exact reason. Strong battling from the chaps however and we only have ourselves to blame for not burying the game first half.
Sunday and SW Alumni of Graveney came to the ‘worth in what was literally a must win game; with both sides unbeaten, level on points and 8 points clear of our nearest rivals. We flew into the game in our cup final mode; and as many a team can now testify there is no stopping Project’s cup final mode. We carved out several openings in the first half hour with Aids finishing brilliantly from one. A reshuffle from the oppo saw them get more of the ball towards the end of the half but some ferocious tackling meant that the Proj were really on top. Second half and we rolled the changes, with one of the subs, Bobby Algar, finishing well from 25 yards to double the lead. The game was fairly even for the majority of the second half, though Graveney edged territory with Proj livelier on the break. The later it got though, the more panicked Project became and we conceded a penalty with 5 to go; Robbo the hero in this instance though, saving well with his feet. SWAG did nick one right at the end, however it finished a deserved 2-1 victory to the Project.
