P&S win against STC
STC taught a lesson
Being top of the table going to play the bottom of the table may suggest that there would be a fairly easy sort of game. The final score line suggests it was fairly easy and for the spectators it seemed the result was never to be in doubt.
For the players it was a job well done, although coach Ginge Wills identified a good number of areas of play that could have been better but P&S have now earned themselves the right to look hard at what will be the finishing line and they are in pole position. If they are able to gain maximum points in their final three league games they will win Durham Northumberland League lll.
The performance against South Tyneside College followed the same pattern as the previous couple of games in that the forwards worked hard to create the platform for the backs o then use their pace and power to score.
By the sixth minute of the game P&S forwards had taken the first couple of scrums and caused some disarray in the home sides defences.
Given the dominance scrum half Mikey Brown took a quick tap penalty and the ball moved out to skipper Steve Rogers who crossed the line for the first score.
Twenty minutes later there was a repeat performance and with Chris Russell converting both P&S moved to a 14point lead.
The third try was a little different in that the forwards won good ball and it was passed from the right hand side of the field along the threequarter line to left wing Kalum Fergus to score.
The first half concluded with an excellent try from fullback Emerson Brown who took the ball at pace kicked ahead and beat all to the touch down.
The four tries gave P&S a bonus point by half time and a 26point lead.
The second half saw another two Steve Rogers tries, both from deep within his own half there were also two tries from right winger Robbie
Fergus, one following a good break by Mikey Brown the second being a misclearance which found its way to Rob who concluded the game by outpacing a very tired defence. When his try was coverted by Chris Russell it took the final score to 52 -0.
Eight tries all scored by backs as have been the tries in the previous four or five games.
The P&S forwards are creating regular and good ball for their backs. With a choice of props including this seasons newcomers; Jimmy Streets and Phil Scandle, the front row has provided stability throughout the season with hooker Charlie Murrey being a consistent performer.
Second row players this season have all had to do more than be effective in the scrum. With Ash Stevenson-Leigh, Gary Walters and Jack Little available Fraser Davison who again had a superb game, finds himself playing blindside wing forward. It would be quite a challenge to count the number of tackles Jack and Fraser put in each game.
The backrow regulars have been Rob Earnshaw, Eanna Flanagan and Matt Bewick with a back up of Harpic Dodds and Luke Murtough.
It has been a huge effort and unavailability of players and a couple of long term injuries have failed to halt the progress of the team.
With a week off P&S will continue their challenge at Chester le Street where they will need to work hard to overcome a side that proved very difficult to overcome when they visited Stocksfield Sportsfield.
