No Rape or Pillage

It could be viewed by some as a normal day at the office. First minute, first try and skipper Steve Rogers leading by example. Some 75minutes later same player same outcome and it really was game over.

Prudhoe and Stocksfield continue to lead the table but needed to gain maximum points from both their remaining games to ensure that Seaham are set the same target and with a massive points deficit to make up.

Jarrovians will play a part in who wins the league title as they were the penultimate game for P&S and will be the concluding game for Seaham.

Jarrovians have a physically large front row and a fairly physical second and back row.back and for the most part teams that are built like that try to keep the ball in the forwards and use their physical power to dominate.

P&S may not have the same bulk but pace, technique and skill levels have increased during the season although for the most part the P&S forwards have provided quick ball for the backs to score.

On Saturday the forwards were not really part of the home sides first try that was down to the running and passing of the threequarters from the kick off.

The second try, some ten minutes later, was unusual in that the forwards seem to recognise that they too could run with the ball against this opposition. Jimmy Streets who has made a big contribution this season carried the ball well and showed good pace to score the first front row try of the season.

Whilst Jarrovians were catching their collective breath from the try they determined to press the home side and take the game to P&S .

It didn’t quite go to plan as from the kick off Emerson Brown and Graham Crosby ran straight back and fed the supporting Mikey Brown for try three. With just twelve minutes gone P&S were 19 points up.

Whether complacency let Jarrovians in or they upped their game a little could be a discussion point but it was the visitors who scored the next try.

Whatever it was it pushed the home side back on track and in the last ten minutes of the first half they scored a further three tries. The first being a genuine wingers try from Emerson Brown. The second another from captain Steve Rogers and the third was a second try for Mikey Brown.

By half time P&S were leading 38 points to 7 and had assured themselves a bonus point by scoring six tries( although only four are needed to secure the point).

The second half saw the visitors lose all shape as their heavy bulky forwards were found to lack stamina and technique. P&S were able to dominate the scrums, although lineouts were not as good.

Before that, the second half started as the first with a P&S try. This time it was a forward, hooker Charlie Murrey, who followed up well to gain a loose ball and score.

Voted “Man of the Match” Fraser Davison was the next try scorer, taking P&S score to 50 before the fiftieth minute of the game.

The game then seemed to lose momentum as P&S made several mistakes seeing a couple of scoring chances lost to forward passes. There was even a second try for Jarrovians before Matty Bewick got another try for the forwards and with four minutes to go Steve Rogers completed another hat-trick in what has been a very good season for him.

Final score 62 -12 P&S ten tries and six converted by Chris Russell.

The final home game of the season is at home to Richmondshire on April 14th and whilst several players will not be available the season has been based on a squad and the demand is for another win and another bonus point to ensure that should Seaham not match the five point haul P&S will be declared champions before their rival have completed their season.
