U9s Edge Out Farsley In Derby Duel
Saints ease home in enjoyable friendly at Red Lane
Two enthusiastic and committed teams brightened a damp morning in Farsley and gave a supportive crowd plenty to admire as Saints finally prevailed by 16 runs.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first. Josh Allinson set the tone of Pudsey's bowling effort with an opening maiden and was followed by Daniel Chris and Max who conceded just 6 runs off the bat between them. At this stage though, Farsley were defending their wickets tenaciously and looked to have built a platform at 212 for the first pair. Up stepped Ellie, Ummar and Ben to snaffle 3 wickets in the next 4 overs, 2 of which were exceptional wicket-maidens. The tight bowling was backed up by terrific fielding as first Thomas and then Ellie and Max plucked balls from the air as if taking apples from a tree. With 209 on the board at halfway, Farsley were struggling. Their next pair of T Tempest and E Williams made some amends by taking the score to 225, but then Thomas, Chris and Ummar struck again to see the Farsley innings close on 228. Chris's smoothed out action, Ummar's 2 wicket-maidens and Ellie's excellence on debut were outstanding, but the whole bowling and fielding effort was most encouraging from such a young side. Thomas and Chris opened the Saints' batting and did well to take the score to 212 with no wickets lost. Josh, Max, Daniel and Ben battled hard in their stints but the Farsley bowling acquired a little venom in mid innings,T Tempest claiming an impressive double-wicket maiden and L Smith and H Hamzah chipping in with 1 apiece. Pudsey's last pair marched out needing 10 to win and the game in the balance. Ellie proceeded to settle any nerves with a swashbuckling knock that yielded 3 boundaries in succession. Ably supported by Ummar, the pair lost no wickets in overhauling the Farsley score and finished a very fair and sporting match in some style.
