It was very different looking MY:UK team that turned out a Waterwells to face the boys in the latest league encounter, some of whom were one or two years older than our boys!
From the kick-off it was clear that the physical size of the MY:UK midfield would make for a tough game. However, the boy’s superior technical ability and team play was shining through, with Snakey and Ben controlling the middle of the park. A few early chances were created but the visiting keeper saved well. It took until the 20th minute for the deadlock to be broken when the ball fell to Snakey on the edge of the box and he wrong footed his marker and fired home. Less than a minute later a well worked move from defence to attack put Sean through on goal and he slipped the ball past the on rushing keeper to make it 2-0. Then from a mix up at a throw-in on half way the MY:UK big midfielder powered through on goal and as he round Ryan he was upended, leaving the Referee no choice but to point to the spot. The penalty was converted to make the half-time score 2-1.
With the boys recognising a few players from older years at School it seemed to fire the boys up and they came out for the 2nd half and dominated the game. More chances should have been converted with Simmo being denied on three or four occasions, and then a great strike from Snakey smashed against the bar. It looked as though Simmo had extended the lead once again, but after a consultation with the linesman the Referee disallowed the goal. However, it wasn’t long before the lead was extended when we were awarded a penalty for after an MY:UK defender handled in the box. Up stepped Jimmy and tucked the ball in to the net.
It was a good work out for the boys and with the addition of some overage players, whilst totally against the rules, it did make it a more competitive game.
