3rds Win Epic Battle
Quedgeley travelled to Eastcombe to play a decent side sitting third in the table. In the spring sunshine, this match soon became a test of endurance.
Both teams started the game well, but Quedgeley were the side looking to play the more attractive football. Eastcombe battled for every ball and every breakdown. As expected, there were chances for either side. Eastcombe on their home pitch, facing down the slight slope in the first half, looked like they were gathering a bit of rhythm. As Quedgeley knocked the ball across midfield and probed in the wide areas, Eastcombe picked their moments and quickly broke towards the Quedgeley defensive third. Quedgeley had already dealt with a few similar attacks comfortably before Eastcombe broke down the left, on this occasion the accurate centre was fired home past Alan Crump from 8 yards.
Quedgeley wiped the sweat from their brow, rolled up their sleeves and showed real grit and determination. Quedgeley piled all sorts of pressure on the home side and with some really neat link up play in midfield, Quedgeley were then satisfied with an equaliser. A ball played into the box aimed at target man Tom Morgan was cleverly flicked towards goal with a neat back heel, only to find its way past the oblivious goalkeeper. A cool finish from the young man, a great way to equalise. The scores stayed level until half time.
The second half offered more of the same, there were chances at both ends. Quedgeley passed and probed, Eastcombe likewise. The temperature made it really tough. Fitness levels were tested along with temperment as the game began to draw towards its conclusion. Eastcombe did put the ball in the back of the net, if it hadn't been for the obvious foul on the goalkeeper Eastcombe might have taken the lead.
It wasn't Eastcombe's day, but it was soon to become Quedgeley's. Chris Smith broke through to chip the onrushing goalkeeper, a good finish and just what Quedgeley deserved for the character and resolve they showed to come back from a goal down.
Quedgeley played out the last five minutes without having to weather the storm as an angry Eastcombe fightback, in fact Quedgeley's defence was so solid the final chances were towards the Eastcombe goal. A great all round performance from Quedgeley.
