10 man Quedgeley Suffer Defeat

Quedgeley faced a Brockworth Albion side who were very much part of the title race, 3 points from the top of the table with a game in hand. On an average pitch in 20 degree heat Quedgeley were not in for an easy ride.

Quedgeley struggled to keep hold of the ball and never looked like going anywhere near the Brockworth goal for large parts of the first half. Brockworth were showing why they were in a title race. A combination of pace and power from 6 attackers proving too much for Quedgeley as they defended wave upon wave of crosses, diagonal balls and channelled runs straight through the middle. When Quedgeley did manage to get the ball out of their box, Steve Norwood was often handy and showed great feet on numerous occasions to try and fasion Quedgeley some sustained possesion and attacking threat.

Quedgeley did eventualy crack after roughly 25 minutes. An attack down the Quedgeley left with 2 player running in the channel, a neat through-ball was played. It didn't need to be an accurate pass with two players to aim for but the finish needed to be with the angle inside the area becoming accute with Alan Crump making himself as big as possible. Accurate it was though as the ball was cracked into the roof of the net, Quedgeley left questioning offside and how they could deal with that sort of attack again.

The task of dealing with the Brockworth onslaught became even more difficult as they broke the offside trap. With a player clean through on goal Chris Smith came across to try and deal with the danger, as the Brockworth player was ahead he attempted to shield the ball by moving across it which resulted in a clash of legs which ultimately sent the player tumbling. The referee issued a straight red.

1-0 down and a man down Quedgeley were staring down the barrel. The resulting free-kick was pumped towards goal and was well blocked but as the ball deflected into a more central position, the ball eventually found it's way into the back of the net. The scoreline was 2-0 at half time.

Quedgeley could have crumbled to pieces in the second half with the heat, 2-0 deficit and one man disadavantage but they didn't. However Brockworth did get another goal, an attack down the Quedgeley right, the pacey winger cut inside and dispatched a shot into the roof of the net.

With so many negatives to think about when starting the second half Quedgeley may have accepted a heavier defeat but should be commended, even if it was only for their second half performance. A number of players continued to battle hard and put their bodies on the line, Jason Rossell dogged in the centre of midfield, Matt Cappell and Craig Edwards could surely play worse and get a clean sheet and Dan Bullivant putting in a tireless display when charged with stretching the Brockworth defence playing up front. One more mention for Sam Sysum who cleared a header off the line in the second half, as a striker another example of everyone trying their best to make it work but it just wasn't Quedgeley's day.
