TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH
With only 4 games of the season left, Wanderers are in for a real battle if they are to clinch promotion.
WRITTEN BY Scott Moroney
Today's opponents Wickwar, currently sit 2nd in the table only 2 points off leaders, Quedgeley Wanderers.
Both sides have occupied the top 2 positions all season and are even level on goal difference. Wickwar are the highest goal scorers and Wanderers have the best defensive record in the league!
So, big game for both sides today.
The game gets underway without either side really creating any clear cut chances. There is an obvious tense, atmosphere to this game with neither side wanting to give anything away.
With the sun in their eyes and the wind in their faces Quedgeley was up against it.
It became clear the Wickwar front 2 had an understanding, pace and ability. Carving out the first chance with a long ball over the top they played intercut passing between one another but the first shot was straight at Bonnie in goal. Still, an early warning sign.
Neither side really able to play the football they wanted with both challenging for everything, decent passages of passing play were few and far between from both sides.
Wanderers winning all the aerial battles other than on occasions where the ball was allowed to bounce.
It was because of this that Wickwar took the lead.
28 Mins - A goal kick taken by the Wickwar keeper, hit down the right side of the pitch was allowed to bounce due partly perhaps to the sun in the players eyes.
The Wickwar winger was first to the ball and headed on to one of his strikers who ran down the the right side before cutting inside and laying a pass off to his strike partner.
From 15 yards out he struck the ball across Bonnie in goal and into the bottom left corner. 1-0 Wickwar.
Quedgeley didn't let their heads drop and showed the usual fighting character that has got them through the tougher games earlier in the season.
Andy Porter found himself in the middle of the field and from just outside the box hit a shot at goal. Wide of the mark but it was one of a few chances that Wanderers had after conceding.
A few strong tackles also started going on with the referee allowing advantage and not booking players where on another day perhaps he would have.
HALF TIME - QUEDGELEY WANDERERS 0-1 WICKWAR WANDERERS
Stern words spoken at half time, a change of personal saw Andy Porter make way for Craig Edwards. the 2nd half gets underway with Quedgeley kicking off.
On the front foot from the off its Wanderers who do most of the early pressing and earn a free kick just outside the box . Stu Ballinger fancies his chances but watches on as his effort goes well over the cross bar.
52 Mins - Further attacking play earns Wanderers a corner. As the ball goes into the box the Wickwar defender clears it as far as the edge of the box. Another Wickwar player tries to bring the ball down under control. As he does so, Scott Moroney has got away from his marker. He takes the ball off the Wickwar player just inside the box. Taking the ball past him to the right he beats the player with one touch before then smashing the ball from 17 yards out. The ball beats a cluster of players and the keeper before hitting the underside of the crossbar and finding the back of the net, 1-1.
After the equaliser the game became stretched, with both sides looking to find a 2nd goal.
Substitutions made for both sides, Ross Bingham off and Jason Rossell on in his place. The change meant Alex Mcatty who wasn't really enjoying the midfield role dropped back into the right back position and Jason Rossell came into centre midfield.
As the half wore on it was difficult to pick a winner. Both sides pushed on without creating any further clear cut chances.
What did happen on 70 minutes was a yellow card for Scott Moroney. After taking more of the player than the ball for the 3rd or 4th time during the game, the ref didn't really have much choice.
A 3rd and final change for Wanderers on 75 minutes saw Stu Ballinger make way for Mark Ballard.
In the end, both sides on the day lacked creativity. Perhaps not wanting to give anything away, the game ended in a fairly boring 1-1 draw.
FINAL - QUEDGELEY WANDERERS 1-1 WICKWAR WANDERERS
With a share of the spoils each the league tables remained as it did before kick off. Quedgeley top and Wickwar 2nd only 2 points behind.
What this means now is it is still very much in Wanderers own hands but it's one hell of a big ask.
With 3 games left only 3 wins will do.
Next up, Hardwicke at home who sit 3rd in the table, 5 points behind but with 2 games in hand.
Come on Quedge!!!
