3rds BACK TO WINNING WAYS
After a poor performance and bad result last week, wanderers really needed the win today....
....Nothing else would suffice if wanderers are to maintain a promotion push.
Wanderers played todays opponents Barnwood at home in the very first league game of the season, running out 4-0 winners that day.
With the home side winning the toss they elected for kick off. Quedgeley's captain for this game, Jason Rossell then decided to swap ends making the most of a wind assisted first half.
The opening few exchanges was won by Wanderers who had clearly learnt a few lessons from last week. Settling quickly on the the ball there was glimpses of some good passing play and a desire to be the first to the ball.
16 mins - with good play down the right side Jason Rossell picked up the ball and played a square ball to Chris Smith who having ventured forward from the midfield also played a neat little pass over to Stu Ballinger who from 10 yards out and square on to goal shot, beating the Barnwood keeper and giving Wanderers a deserved 1-0 lead.
Only 6 minutes later, Stu Ballinger had too much to say for himself and talked his way into the ref's book with a yellow card!
24 mins - Having not had too much to do if anything, Tom Farmer was called into action making triple saves from the same attack keeping Wanderers lead in tact.
30 mins - A Barnwood attack broken up by the Quedgeley defence put the away side on a counter attack. With some good play via midfield a Mark Ballard pass found Jason Rossell who looped the ball into the Barnwood box finding Stu Ballinger who almost with a carbon copy of his first goal doubled the Wanderers lead, 0-2
Quedgeley looked comfortable during the opening 30 minutes and well worth their 2 goal lead.
35 mins - A loose ball in the centre of the field saw the bald guy on the opposition side pick up the ball and unchallenged had plenty of time to pick a long ball over the top.
Finding his striker on the left side, ran into the box a beat Tom Farmer with a well hit shot, finding the top right corner, 1-2.
The goal came as a timely reminder to Wanderers that the job wasn't done and still a long way to go.
With only 4 minutes until half time Stu Ballinger had a chance to restore the 2 goal cushion. A through ball from James Lawes saw Ballinger 1 on 1 with the keeper only to sky his shot way over the bar.
HALF TIME - BARNWOOD UNITED 1-2 QUEDGELEY WANDERERS
Quedgeley came out for the second half determined to take a grip of the game and kill it off as soon as they could.
The game was not really one for a bad challenge but the ref was quite partial to dishing out a card or two. On 52 minutes for a nothing challenge a Barnwood player this time found himself being booked with a yellow card and giving wanderers a free kick in the Barnwood half.
53 mins - A Lee Overthrow free kick pinged in to the back post found Jason Rossell only a few yards out to head in, 1-3.
Barnwood just did not have an answer and never really threatened.
62 mins - As is so often the case, James Lawes found himself down the left side and deep in the Barnwood half. With a pinpoint cross, this was definitely a cross he found Lee Overthrow in the box 6 yards out to tap the ball home on the volley, 1-4.
Despite now having a 3 goal cushion, Quedgeley continued to attack covering a fair amount of ground with their 10 men. This started to tell on 65 minutes with small gaps appearing in the formation.
67 mins - With Quedgeley pushed up the field the Barnwood midfield played a few passes and one of their players casually ran through the middle of the park and from a good 35 yards out cleanly struck the football. Before Tom Farmer could even register a shot being taken the ball had passed him into the top right corner, 2-4.
71 mins - Just to freshen things up both defensively and offensively wanderers made the first substitution of the game. Off went Mark Ballard on came, Jamie Lee.
This was quickly followed up by a 2nd change on 74 mins. Lee Overthrow picked up a minor knock so on went Andy Porter.
80 mins - With the game looking won and one eye on Frampton next week, a mardy, Stu Ballinger was taken off before getting a 2nd yellow.
The game fizzled out and Quedgeley picked up the points but not before Alex McCatty on 83 minutes and a Barnwood player on 90 minutes picking up a yellow card each.
Both bookings unnecessary from the referee's point of view, obviously sharpened his pencil that morning and wanted to,use it.
FULL TIME - BARNWOOD UNITED 2-4 QUEDGELEY WANDERERS
A reasonable performance from Wanderers without really getting out of 3rd gear.
We now look forward to a massive game with Frampton next week. A game which will have a big bearing on how the title race shapes up,for the final 3rd part of the season.
