A HARD EARNT POINT
Today's game saw Wanderers travel over to Nailsworth to face, Taverners.
A new Taverners team whom in recent weeks had picked up some good results including a 7-2 win over Wickwar, would prove to be a good test!
Taverners get the game underway against a Wanderers side with more positional changes that included a rare start for Jamie Lee on the right wing.
The opening 10 minutes are played out with very little to write home about. In fact the first chance comes from a Quedgeley corner against the run of play.
12 Mins - Lee "Fro" Overthrow meets the corner with a header from 5 yards out, only for the opposition keeper to make a good save and tip the ball over the bar for another corner.
Nothing came of the 2nd corner and from that point both sides created chances without really testing either keeper.
25 Mins - Stu Ballinger picked up the ball on the left side and on running into the box trickled a cross over to Lee Overthrow, who had shown the pace of Usain Bolt to offer support and get into the box. Despite his first shot being deflected his effort was rewarded when the deflection bounced back his way for him to tap the ball in and give wanderers the lead, 0-1.
29 Mins - One of the Taverners substitutions was obviously wound up by going a goal down. So much so that when the ball went out for a throw in and his manager asked him to fetch it, it all kicked off. The handbags came out and the gloves came off. Lots of pushing and hi pitched squeals from both. ( a lot like the sound Crouch made against Wickwar, away earlier in the season ). The Taverners sub shouted at his manager, " I'm going to rip your f*****g head off". This was heard from the other side of the pitch by the thousands of Quedgeley fans who couldn't believe what was unfolding before them.
It finished with the Taverners substitute taking his shirt off and throwing it to the ground exposing his pale, pigeon chest as he stormed off!
The half began to fizzle out. Both sides continued to attack one another without really ever penetrating one another's defence.
HALF TIME - TAVERNERS 0-1 QUEDGELEY WANDERERS
With the second half underway it only took 10 minutes before another talking point.
55 Mins - Alex McCatty, hangs a leg out and brings a Taverners player down out on the left side of the box as they attack from right to left.
Inside? Outside? It made no odds as the ref pointed to the spot. With power and precision from the spot, Tom Farmer had no chance. The ball rustled away in the bottom right corner, 1-1.
After conceding, Quedgeley regroup and gather their composure. Keeping the ball well they earn a free kick just inside the Taverners half.
58 Mins - Chris Smith takes the kick and lofts it into the opposition area. From just outside the 6 yard box the Taverners defender attempts to header the ball clear. In doing so, the ball skips off his forehead behind him into the air and over his keeper, finding the back of the net to restore Wanderers lead, 1-2.
63 Mins - Nothing anyone could have done about the equaliser, well maybe close the goal scoring player down.
From just outside and off centre the Taverners player curled the ball with pace into the top right corner, 2-2.
Five minutes on and Alex McCatty is hogging the limelight again!
68Mins - What has he done...? I'll tell you what he's done. Looking older and slower than the great warrior, Geoff McCatty, he fails to stand the attacker up and fend him onto his weaker foot, pushing him out wide. Instead he chooses a tangle of legs. Looking for a breather and a lie down, both players fall to floor inside the Quedgeley area and once more the ref points to the spot. Before the kick is taken, McCatty is shown a yellow card.
Facing up against the beast/Farmers son, Tom Farmer in goal, the penalty taker bottles it. He pushes his shot well wide keeping the score level at 2-2.
Taverners now begin to turn the screw as they push for the winner. A number of shots on goal and if not for some good saves from Tom Farmer, Wanderers could have been behind.
72 Mins - A Taverners player attempts an audacious bicycle kick from 7 yards out with only the keeper to beat. With the ball up in the air, from nowhere who else should show up? Alex McCatty. With great stupidity he puts his face on the end of the opposition players boot. His glass jaw shatters and he falls to the floor for another lie down. A squirt in his face with some magic water and he's back on his feet with lockjaw.
Wanderers spend the majority of the time left defending which resulted in Ross Bingham also being shown a yellow card. A few counter attacks towards the end that Taverners dealt with resulting in the points being shared as the ref blew up for full time.
FULL TIME - TAVERNERS 2-2 QUEDGELEY WANDERERS
No complaints really. A stern test from Taverners, difficult to pick a winner. By the time of the final whistle being blown, not a bad result.
