TOP vs BOTTOM
After last weeks result Wanderers needed to get back to winning ways. An away game to Dursley lay in wait.
The reverse fixture saw a shock result as Quedgeley lost at home to Dursley earlier in the season in awful conditions.
As the game kicked off, Dursley had the better of the earlier exchanges. Settling early on the ball and to their credit, the Dursley players passed the ball about nicely making the wanderers players work for the ball.
Having been on top for a good 15 minutes Dursley grew in confidence but also with this pushed players forward looking for the early goal. This would be there undoing.
16 Mins - Mark Ballard from the right side squared the ball into the box along the ground finding Andrew Porter in space. Porter hit the ball first time, going wide of the left hand post a Dursley defender toe poked onto the post. The ball bouncing off the post and behind the line. Goal!?!?! Not according to the referee. He changed his mind seconds later when the Dursley keeper pointed out the ball was well past the line. 0-1.
Wanderers needed the goal to settle themselves down. This did provide for a more even game but it was still Dursley dominating in the middle of the field, still Dursley looking like they wanted it more.
22 Mins - As in every game Ballinger finds himself 1 on 1 with the keeper but never really looks set as he shoots across the keeper but wide of the target.
33 Mins - Stu Ballinger, given a yellow card for totting up with a nothing challenge just inside the Quedgeley half.
The free kick is lofted into the Wanderers area and a Dursley player heads in unchallenged from the back post, 1-1
What was clear from the opening 30 minutes was that Dursley are a better side than there league position would suggest. They certainly wasn't about to roll over and give Wanderers the points.
43 Mins - From a Quedgeley corner the ball was headed about the keeper parried a shot straight to Matt Cappell who headed home from 5 yards out, 1-2.
HALF TIME - DURSLEY TOWN 1-2 QUEDGELEY WANDERERS
Changes by the manager Chris Smith at half time. He came on for Lee Overthrow and Jason Rossell also came on for James Lawes.
The formation remained the same but players changed positions as Wanderers looked to freshen things up, steady the midfield and kill the game off.
50 Mins - Chris Smith is booked for a challenge. A nothing challenge but with Dursley appealing for everything the referee felt he needed to once more get his crayons out and show Smith a yellow card. The 2nd of the game for Wanderers and the referee walks away smiling. ( All in a day's work).
Once again, from the resulting free kick, Dursley score to make it 2-2. The goal scorer clearly pushing the Wanderers defender to the floor as he heads the ball past Tom Farmer in goal.
Without any real passage of play from either side for the next 10 minutes the game looked fairly even. Difficult to pick a winner from this.
Then a massive talking point.
61 Mins - One of the half time substitutions looks to have back fired. The manager, Chris Smith is shown a second yellow, resulting in a red. It's suspected for being a gob shite after a Dursley challenge goes unpunished. To be fair, only minutes earlier, Chris Smith was shown a yellow for a lot less! ( For full details speak to young Christopher).
So, down to 10 men for the remainder of the game, Matt Cappell dropped back leaving Ballinger up top on his own.
65 Mins - A more defensive change this time. Off goes Andy Porter and in from the wilderness, it's been a long time but on comes......... Tom Morgan and his tilted head.
(Many go weak at the knees as he graces the field).
The next period of play see's both teams cancelling each other out. Despite being down to 10 men, Wanderers raise their game. Defend the Dursley attacks well, retain possession of the ball better but without creating any real chances.
79 Mins - From nowhere, Wanderers push forward and the Dursley back four playing a high line get caught out.
Craig Edwards passes the ball through the defence for Stu Ballinger to run on and smash the ball past the keeper with his left foot from 9 yards out, 2-3.
From all the attacking, Dursley players looked dead on their feet. The 3rd goal looked to have won it for Quedgeley.
However the referee had other ideas. He instead decided to find an extra 6 minutes or added time.
92 Mins - Nathan Overthrow gives away a free kick out on the left side as Dursley attack. As with the previous 2 free kicks, Quedgeley appear unable to defend!
Dursley win the first header and send it across goal, only for it to be met by another opposition player to head home from 3 yards, 3-3.
FINAL - DURSLEY TOWN 3-3 QUEDGELEY WANDERERS
On reflection, a much improved Dursley team against a hard working Wanderers team.
A draw was probably a fair result.
Sadly it was the referee than would take the lime light in this game for all the wrong reasons.
Quedgeley have only taken 1 point from 6 against Dursley this season. Things have to improve for the final 5 games if Wanderers are to get promotion.
On the plus side, Wanderers once again show fight and determination proving a difficult team to beat having been sent down to 10 men for most of the second half!
