A MUCH NEEDED WIN
After 2 draws in their last two fixtures, Wanderers went into today's game against Brockworth at home needing nothing less than a win.
With only 5 games remaining Wanderers still sit top of the table, only 2 points above 2nd placed Wickwar. The race for promotion is extremely tight with Ramblers sitting in 5th place, 6 points behind Wanderers with 2 games in hand.
Every remaining game really is a must win.
Matt Cappell sadly had to pull out hours before kick off meaning a welcome return for Scott Moroney following a lengthy lay off with an ankle ligament injury.
Having won the toss Scott Moroney opted to use the strong wind to his advantage. Shooting with the wind behind to assist for the first half, Brockworth get kick off.
Quedgeley start the brighter of the 2 teams and enjoy the majority of the early possession. In fact it didn't take long for Wanderers to open the scoring.
9 Mins - Stu Ballinger is fed the ball on the right side edge of the box. Running into the box he crosses the ball along the ground and his cross is met his strike partner Chris Smith who side foots the ball home past the Brockworth keeper, 1-0.
Following on from the goal the play continued in much of the same fashion. Wanderers would dominate the play with Brockworth breaking on a counter attack which was dealt with comfortably by the wanderers defence.
Quedgeley on 16 mins earn the first corner of the game. This was spoke about before kick off but yet to be worked on during training. Just as discussed James Lawes took the corner finding Jason Rossell on the back post but he puts his header wide.
19 Mins - As is so often the case, James Lawes runs at pace with the ball down the left flank. He passes, no he doesn't! Without even looking up, he pings the ball at pace over the keepers head and into the top corner, 2-0.
After the 2nd goal went in, Wanderers looked to relax more on the ball without really pushing for the 3rd. This meant the game evened out without much more to write about.
Taking wanderers into half time at 2-0 up.
HALF TIME - QUEDGELEY WANDERERS 2-0 BROCKWORTH ALBION
With a comfortable lead, confident of the win already Wanderers know that promotion might just come down to goal difference.
As they come out and kick off the 2nd half, on the front foot it's one attack after another.
It doesn't take long.
49 Mins - With a carbon copy of his first goal, James Lawes as he did in the first half runs with the ball down the left and from 30 yards out he unleashes another left foot drive. This time hit harder and lower. Everyone turns round for a goal kick. In the mean time Lawes his heard to scream. It looks as if the ball has gone behind. The keeper is on the floor shaking his head. He's only gone and scored again, 3-0.
54 Mins - With the game looking to be over already Moroney back from injury calls for a change. Off he goes and on comes the son of Dennis. Tyrone Vincent, another player who has been away for a while but for other reasons (dating Sarah Smith). He comes on in a straight swap.
61 Mins - Down comes the rain and hail as the heavens open. So too comes an Albion goal. With no options available an Albion player hits the ball low and hard. Beating Ryan Bonnie down to his right side the ball rustles into the bottom corner. 3-1.
63 Mins - Another Wanderers change, off goes Mark Ballard and on comes Tom Morgan. He goes up top and Chris Smith drops back to right midfield.
Both teams begin to attack one another as the game becomes stretched. This works out for Brockworth who score next.
68 Mins - Another shot from nothing and wanderers concede a 2nd as Ryan Bonnie is beaten on his other side, the ball skips off the greasy surface and into the goal, 3-2.
70 Mins - Looking like a drowned rat from running the line on comes the space cowboy, Harry Taylor in a change whereby Chris Smith takes him self off. Taylor goes into right midfield.
72 Mins - The Albion keeper just does not learn. In what has become a long standing joke all season. James Lawes bags himself hatrick with yet another cross come shot.
I won't even explain what happened, you should know by now. On scoring his 3rd goal Lawes revealed a super man top. Could he really be Superman? He scores goals from angles that nobody else can and he does it without even looking up, Hmmmmnn..... I still prefer Batman. 4-2.
76 Mins - A Brockworth attack, the ball is crossed in and an Albion striker jumps highest winning a header from all of 14 yards out to head the ball down and past Bonnie on his line. 4-3.
Wanderers as they have over the last few weeks make life hard for themselves. This game was all but over on 54 Mins. Now it's down to a tense 15 minutes.
It's disappointing to concede 1 let alone 3 and with goal difference possibly being a title decider, Quedgeley might live to regret this.
Then..... 81 Mins - A real super hero, nobody could ever have predicted this.
Tom Morgan, take a bow son. This goal will go down in folklore. A goal that makes me proud to call you my team mate. (The printing room will be busy with, " I was there when Crouchy scored that goal" t-shirts).
So here is how it went, Stu Ballinger is passed the ball, he beats one defender and makes his way into the left side of the box. As the covering player comes across to attempt a challenge Stu squares the ball to his strike partner, Tom "Crouch" Morgan.
He takes a touch, composes himself. As the keeper comes out Tom Morgan plays a delicate chip over the keeper, against the strong wind the ball trickles over the line.
Well done for the assist Stu Ballinger but take note son. That is how you score one on ones. 5-3.
I have to say having scored such a great goal, what a poor celebration. You must have dreamt of that goal all your life. You could have picked a celebration to have matched.
Geoff McCatty will be gutted he missed this!
FINAL - QUEDGELEY WANDERERS 5-3 BROCKWORTH ALBION
A shame to have given away 3 goals. However, 3 points in the bag and back to winning ways.
Going into the final 4 games there is a full squad to pick from as all players are now back.
This can only lift spirits as Wanderers welcome Wickwar and Hardwicke in the next 2 games. Fixtures that are likely to decide the Wanderers season.
GOALS - James Lawes x 3, Chris Smith & Tom Morgan
ASSISTS - Stu Ballinger x 2
MOM - James Lawes
