Wrens' pre-season off to a five goal flier
RAINWORTH launched their pre-season friendly programme tonight by coasting to a 5-0 victory at Clay Cross Town.
The pitch was in remarkably good condition despite the rainstorms which had struck the region in recent days.
And the managerless Central Midlands North side gave a good account of themselves, playing the ball around well at times.
But they could not live with a fluent Rainworth performance which, although against a side from three levels below, promised much for the coming season.
The Wrens were 4-0 up at the break with Stephen Akers adding to his 13th minute looping header from a Kieran Walker cross with a 21st minute penalty goal after he was brought down.
Ricky Hanson cut in from the left to score the third after being sent on his way by Ryan Goward seven minutes later.
And, seven more minutes on, it was Hanson's turn to supply Goward, whose cross was expertly headed in by Sam West.
The only goal of a more even second half came from Callum Lloyd, a close range 54th minute strike.
But it was a slick passing display which delighted the Wrens' following in a crowd of 91 at least as much as the result.
