Oh, What a Circus, Oh, What a Show!

The words from the musical Evita, best sum up Rainworth’s current predicament after losing 3-0 to Teversal at home in the FA Vase today.

There are some who would point out that with four key players missing that there are reasons for the predicament. Others would refer to a well-worn formula ‘Can’t Score plus can concede, equals a need for a review of the playing staff!’

Harsh though it may sound at Kirklington Road today after forty-five minutes the score of 2-0 to Teversal, beggared belief. Rainworth had the lion’s share of the chances but conceded two of the softest goals you will ever see.

The second-half followed the pattern of the first and in the end the 3-0 scoreline, in favour of Teversal, was inevitable.

Rainworth were the first to have an attempt on goal but Luke Walker’s 5th minute effort deflected into the arms of Rio Alberry.

Minutes later and Teversal’s Danny Fletcher’s cross went the full width of the six-yard box without anyone getting a telling touch.

Rainworth continued to push forward and after a nice interchange of passes, Tom Sharpe set up Roberto Labbate, but his shot was always going over.

On nineteen minutes Blessing Adeleye’s cross finds Walker but his first touch lets him down and it rebounds into the arms of Rio Alberry. A minute later and its Walker whose header sets up Adeleye, but he’s was unable to bring the ball under control and it was cleared.

Rainworth almost took the lead in the 31st minute but Rio Alberry did well to block Walker’s goal-bound effort with his legs.

Teversal took the lead in the 36th minute when they had a huge slice of luck, aided and abetted by some lax defending when Ben Cartwright was allowed to get in his cross. There seemed no danger, but the ball bounced in the six-yard box, took a wicked deflection and ended up in the top corner with Warren Squires left a mere spectator.

Shortly afterwards Jake Vernon’s effort from outside of the area was straight at Squires and the shot was easily gathered. Rainworth went straight down the other end and when Adeleye set up Roberto Labbate, Rio Alberry was a spectator when his effort rebounded off the post to safety.

Just before half-time Rainworth manged once again to concede when there seemed no danger, an innocuous ball appeared to be going into the arms of Squires but when it struck Barry Alberry it ended up in the net for Teversal’s second. The goal was so soft, former Wren Alberry appeared embarrassed to claim it.

That was the last action of a half Rainworth had had the better of the chances, but it was Teversal who led 2-0.

Rainworth should have pulled one back in the 48th minute when Walker set up Adeleye, but he put his effort too near the keeper and he saved with his leg. Roberto Labbate’s follow-up went inches wide of the post.

The half continued with Rainworth having a lot of the play, but their finishing was nowhere good enough and in the 63rd minute they paid the penalty when they allowed yet another preventable cross to come into the area. It was met with Vernon’s audacious bicycle-kick and you know it’s not your day when it strikes the crossbar before hitting two defenders and crossing the line for the third goal.

Rainworth made three substitutions in the 68th minute bringing on Antonio Wedderburn for Sharpe and the 75th saw Kyle Lee replace Adeleye and on 85 minutes Jordan Denyer replaced Scott Wesley.

The final minutes saw Rainworth Rio Alberry easily deal with Wedderburn’s free-kick and Jacob Webster’s long-range effort.

At the final whistle it was Teversal who advanced to the next round aided and abetted by a charitable Rainworth side who at present can’t buy a goal.
