Substitutions Decide Close Game
Fourth placed Maltby Main visited Kirklington Road today hoping to avenge their 3-2 defeat at Muglet Lane earlier in the season.
In a hard-fought game, it was decided by a couple of goals by the substitutes in the final fifteen minutes, the second coming as Rainworth pressed for the equaliser in the final minute.
Rainworth were the first to threaten when Max Pemberton put his effort just wide from Matt Sykes’s corner in the 4th minute.
Whilst at the other end Steve McDonnell was initially denied by Pemberton’s defensive tackle before hitting the rebound just wide. Two minutes later and they were indebted to Ben Townsend’s point blank save from Bradley Kilner as their appeals for offside were in vain.
Maltby almost opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Cameron Rigby’s effort went inches wide of the far upright with Townsend beaten.
The game was hard fought and end-to-end, Kyle Jordan’s effort was straight at Josh Lill and Joe Austin’s effort at the other end just curled over.
Maltby had edged the opening half hour and they went close again when Danny Patterson’s effort went just wide.
The final third of the half saw Rainworth come back into the game and Jordan was unlucky to see his deft lob beat Lill but landed on top of the net.
In the 37th minute a quick Rainworth break saw Jordan set up Tomas Poole but Lill was able to gather the effort at the second attempt. Minutes later and Maltby had Lill to thank has he just managed to tip Poole’s long-range effort round the upright.
The final effort of the half fell to Poole once again, but his effort was inches over the crossbar.
Rainworth went close in the 53rd minute when Richard Adams header from Jack Waddle’s free-kick was inches wide. They went even closer a couple of minutes later but Lill just managed to close Sykes down enough and his effort was inches wide of the far upright.
Maltby came back into the game and Poole did well to head the ball off the line after Townsend appeared top be impeded from the corner.
Two minutes later his point-blank save from Josh Nodder prevented Maltby taking the lead.
Rainworth brought on Nathan Modest for Charlie Dawes.
The opening goal came in the 75th minute when substitute Sam Foster ran onto an excellent through ball, he kept his composure as Townsend came out, flicking it over him into the empty net.
Rainworth made their final two substitutions bringing on Alex Nightingale and Luke Walker for Poole and Sykes respectively.
Rainworth threw everything at Maltby, but they held out and in the final minute capitalised on a wayward free-kick. They broke quickly and when substitute Ryan Carroll outpaced the defence he gave Townsend no chance for the second.
There was just time to restart the game before the referee blew for fill-time.
