Rappahannock Women defeat Frederick in first game of the season!
This past Saturday the Rappahannock Women traveled to Maryland to kick-off the 2017-18 season against Frederick Women’s Rugby Club. Rappahannock traveled well dressing 20 players. Both teams played well at the start, but after eight minutes Rappahannock posted the first try of the match by Ellie Casetta. Frederick responded after a yellow card left Rappahannock down with a try of their own. The final try of the half was scored when Kirsten Brown powered over a Frederick defender at the try line. The following conversion kick was made by Molly Walter. The half ended with a score 12-5 in favor of Rappahannock.
The second half began with Rappahannock coming out playing faster and harder than the first half. The speed and pressure at which Rappahannock played proved to be too much for Frederick as they gave up two tries, one by Molly Walter and then another by Jenny Tkac. Frederick answered back with a try scored by a reserve prop near the middle of the half. Yielding a score of 22-10 still in favor of Rappahannock. Rappahannock used the score as motivation, continued to put pressure on the opposition and took advantage of a yellow card that left Frederick a player down as Ellie Casetta put up two addition tries. The final ten minutes of play fell in Frederick’s favor as they posted two more tries and a conversion, but in the end their effort fell short as Rappahannock held off the comeback attempt and earned their first victory of the campaign 32-22.
The win was an outstanding demonstration of a young and growing team playing good rugby and loving the opportunity to get on the field together against an opponent. Each player played above the line of expectations and should be extremely proud of themselves!!!
Players of the match were rookie prop, Stana Yates whose hard running and sure tackles played a key in the victory and scrum-half, Ellie Casetta who posted three tries, countless breakaway runs and lead the attack with precision and decisiveness.
Great Job, Ladies……I can’t wait to see and be a part of the next match!
