Jake Hodges reports from Adel CC on the first of last weekends Second XI fixtures

On a warm summer's day RCC 2nd XI turned up to Adel's picturesque ground. Skipper Martel lost the toss and Rawdon were put into bat. Things started badly when the in form Scanlan, once again proving to be a flat track bully, was strangled down the leg side when one bounced off the self proclaimed wheels of Ferguson- Rawdon 0-1 after the first over of the day. In strode the experienced David Gilks who went about constructing a partnership with the youngster Goldthorp. The pair took the score to 28 before Gilks was cleaned up by an in-swinging Yorker from Ferguson. This brought Hodges to the crease fresh from his fielding exploits in the First XI. The pair put on 32 runs at a steady rate before the veteran off spinner Shires removed Goldthorp first ball of his spell, Goldthorp falling to a ball which bounced as he was caught at slip for 21. This signalled the start of a Rawdon collapse. Doidge came and went for 1, the result of a leading edge, which was soon followed by an atrocious Hodges "drive" which was spooned to point for 26. Rawdon 73-5. This left Dyer (0*) welcoming Baxter to the crease. They added a partnership of 17 before Baxter gave Shires his second wicket as he was out LBW sweeping for 10. RCC 90-6. As a result, skipper Martel came to the crease and set about counter attacking the Adel bowling. With Dyer at the other end the pair added 24 to the score before the keeper batsman was bowled for 9. 114-7 soon became 116-8 as Jennings was given out caught behind, not that he agreed. Young Smith was the next man in and hung around well before being "bowled" twice in the same over (the first incident being over turned as square leg adjudged the keeper to have broken the bails) Smith out for 5 and Rawdon were 125-9. The tenth wicket of Thompson (5) and Martel added 7 as the Second XI were all out for 132 leaving the skipper stranded on 25.
During the break Rawdon didn't feel massively out of the game despite being probably 30 runs short.
Jennings and Hodges went about defending the score with a need for early wickets. Both bowlers bowling tightly to the Adel openers. Hodges made the breakthrough as the younger Ridgeway was adjudged LBW for 2 - Adel 6-1. Adel scored slowly as the batsman looked to hang around. By this stage Goldthorp had been brought into the attack at the expense of Jennings. Hodges then picked up two wickets in quick succession as the 3 & 4 batsman fell for 11 runs between them leaving Adel 39-3 with only Robinson looking assured on 21*.
With the game well and truly in the balance Martel brought himself into the attack and kept the run rate quiet. The tight bowling partnership between the skipper and Goldthorp lured the dangerous Robinson down the track to see him stumped for 35. Adel 61-4. Things then got even better for Rawdon as Adel's skipper and number 6 batsman soon came and went for 0, plumb in front to Goldthorp.
At 63-5 Rawdon felt they had the edge. O'Sullivan and the long hitting Kirkham got together and added 17 to the score before Hodges burgled O'Sullivans wicket when he top edged a pull shot to the safe hands of Goldthorp- Adel 80-6. Sadly this was the last wicket of the day as the Kirkham & Ferguson partnership saw Adel home to their target of 133.
The disappointing loss saw the 2nd XI take 4 points front the day and drop in the league from Second to fourth place with 90 points, a point off third. Next up the seconds will look to bounce back against table toppers North Leeds (106 points) at Larkfield Road.
