Abbey Under 13’s B Beat Sleet, Snow and Newbury
Abbey Under 13’s B got back to winning ways by ending Newbury B’s undefeated run having to contend with sleet and snow as well as fired up Newbury squad.
Abbey made an impressive start to this Berkshire League encounter. From regaining the ball in the loose a glorious piece of counter-attacking rugby from the visitor’s releasing David Few to run from deep, cutting through the Newbury defence and scoring the opening try under the posts. Josh Ward adding the conversion for an Abbey seven point lead.
Newbury responded by going on the attack and soon were pressurising the Abbey line. They were soon to register their first score of the day following an offside call against Abbey, the hosts scoring in the corner from close range.
Abbey’s next try owed much to the creativeness of centre Brendan Clark, who receiving the ball from an attacking ruck surged through a gap in the Newbury defence to slide in under the posts. Brendan Clark ably converting his own try to stretch the Abbey lead.
Newbury managed a score before the break. Half Time Newbury 12 – 14 Abbey B.
Newbury gained the upper hand after the break and began the second half brightly. They were soon rewarded for their enterprise with a converted try to take them into the lead for the first time.
Captain George Marshall rallied his troops and the forwards including Mitchell Crowther, Patrick Croucher, Theo Healis and Luke Bromfield began to control the ball. Although on several occasions two and three man overlaps weren’t made to count the forwards provided the platform for some attacking opportunities.
Luke Bromfield was the first to take advantage, the Newbury defence unable to deal with his barrelling run towards the posts. Brendan Clark converted to put Abbey back into the lead. Luke Bromfield soon made it a brace of tries with another run, Newbury’s efforts still not able to deal with this attacking force. Josh Ward returning to kicking duties to make it Newbury 19 – 28 Abbey B.
Newbury always looked threatening and as the weather took a turn for the worse they were on the attack and through the Abbey defence for a converted try to pull them back into the game.
As the minutes ticked down Abbey summoned the effort for one last attack and through several phases of play Theo Healis finally burst from the maul to score. Unfortunately Josh Ward missed the conversion.

To their credit, Newbury kept pushing for a try but the Abbey defence stood firm to secure a well deserved win.
