London Irish Festival - Winners
The Final London Irish fixtures took place on Saturday 20th April in Yateley. Due to previous weather cancellations this last session was a stand-alone Tournament.
We took a squad of 9 to play 6-a-side matches under the New Rules.
On the whole we played very well considering how little rugby the boys have been able to play in the last few months.
We won our all of our 4 group matches beating Alton 5:4, Winchester Two 7:4, Marlborough 7:0 and New Milton 7:5.
There was a long wait to discover who would contest the final, but based on our results it was more about who we would play .
The Final was against Winchester One. Being Winchester’s stronger team we expected a hard match and were not disappointed.
The first tries went with play. Winchester then made an error just before half time allowing Edward to run ¾ of the pitch to score in the corner, 5:4 at half time. Second half we scored first but then made a couple of errors allowing Winchester to draw level. In the dying seconds we were attacking their line but managed to spot a gap out wide allowing Jacob to score the winning try. A great game of rugby which we deservedly won.
On the whole Kevin & I thought the boys played really well. The level of concentration for each match was much better than it has been in some previous tournaments and the boys definitely looked like they wanted to win in the final. Nearly everyone scored a try but it was the team work and support play that resulted in us winning rather than some individuals standing out. However I must mention Jake scoring a total of 14 tries and Dylan 7. Tagging was also much better typified by the Final where Winchester scored after the 4th or 5th tag where as we would score with them only tagging us twice.
We proceeded to the Madjeski Stadium to collect our medals and trophies at half time.
Well done to everyone involved.
