A good competitive fixture against a team we seem to have played a lot this year. It was good to come out on top over the morning and some good rugby was played. However, we must focus on cutting out basic errors. Despite the wind this morning there were too many spilt passes, missed kicks and dropped balls. We also need to be tighter over the ball at the ruck - we often stand off and let the opposition come in and nick the ball. We need to focus on going in low and hard to secure the ball and to drive through. By doing this we can ruck anyone off the park and ensure that our scrum halves get the good ball they relish. A good win overall, but we made it harder for ourselves than we needed to!
The scrum was solid and secure against a big Tadley outfit. Lawrence moved into the front row to prop alongside Ben C and Ben S to give Ed a chance to move into the second row alongside Ben H. This tight five gave Abbey a solid foundation and with Archie in his usual position at number 8 the forwards looked solid. Tom had a good game - tackling everything and using his speed to good effect. Outside him we need to refocus on our ability to create. We have strength and pace but today a combination of dropped balls and misplaced passes meant that Ewan, Peter and Harry were unable to put together the fluent rugby we know that they're capable of producing. Josh was solid at full back and, on the wing, George had a couple of half chances and Hamzah was rarely given the chance to show his speed. A close game all through but a try for Tadley saw them nick the game one nil.
A change of personnel, but the focus continued. The forwards were strong with Daniel W, Sam, Daniel B providing the front row platform and Travis moving into the second row alongside Erik. Bryn at number 8 completed the forward set. The game was close and with Callum and Jacob at half back the Abbey boys were able to look to move the ball. Alex was tackling like a demon in the centre and with Jack D the other centre the team had good shape to provide space for Corin on the wing to exploit. George and Tom completed the team on the wing and full back respectively and added their commitment to the team. Tom managed to sneak over for Abbey's only try of the game and the final score of 1-1 was a fair reflection of the game.
The boys wanted to show Tadley that the first game wasn't indicative of the relative strengths of the teams. From the kick off Peter made a good tackle on the catcher to force a ruck which Abbey turned over and from the quick ball Tom sprinted down the touch line to claim his second of the morning. This seemed more like it! The rest of the game was fairly even, but although there were fewer mistakes in this game, there were still too many basic errors that the team will need to reflect on and try to eliminate from the game. The forwards of Ben C, Ben S, Lawrence, Ed, Ben H and Archie again gave a good platform and the backs, as always, were solid in defence. Going forward we need to focus on alignment and distribution so that we can optimise our many talents. The team plays at its best when there is fluidity to bring the runners into play. With a good platform we need to regain that. Tom again was forceful and committed, Ewan tackled anything and everything, Peter was strong, Harry elusive, George tackled strongly, Josh creative, and Hamzah quick. The team played better than in the first game and were worthy 1-0 winners.
A marvellous way to finish the morning. The forward platform was, again, solid. Daniel W, Sam, Daniel B were robust and the locks of Bryn and Erik tight so that Jack D could slot in as a tearaway number 8. With a couple of strong, mazy runs Callum had a good game at scrum half. Ewan played at fly half with Jacob moving to full back. The first try showed Jacob's balanced running. From a miskicked clearance the Abbey full back collected and after a strong arcing run was able to score his second in two weeks. In the centre Alex continued his good form and Travis moved into the centre after his strong showing up front in game 2. Hamzah and Corin on the wings completed the team. Tadley managed to bring the score back to 1-1, but in the last play a bursting run from Bryn ended with the second row surging over to give Abbey a well deserved 2-1 victory.
