U13s produce powerful display vs Reeds Weybridge in 9-3 home victory

Expansive passing game to the fore

The U13s squad responded to the mixed performance at Reading RFC festival with a great display of great attacking lines and running rugby.

Reeds arrived with a 13 boy squad and no replacements – but started the game brightly with some aggressive rucking and strong running. As with every game this season, it was the opposition that scored first taking advantage of confusion amongst the Abbey back 3 with a kick to run in from their own half.

This shook the boys into action responding some expansive running which Reeds struggled to repel with some last ditch tackles. Eventually Abbey closed the half with three quick tries to lead 3-1. Changes made at the break led paid dividends immediately with great running and passing through phases by the Abbey back-line, which tired the Reeds defence out. This led to a few tries for Abbey in quick succession – with Jake breaking tackles with great running lines on a few occasions to score. The highlight of the day was a superb solo try by Archie, who ran from his own half with pace and power that left the Reeds behind – ‘Jona Lomu’ style. The lead quickly stretched to 8-1.

As we entered the final quarter, injuries took their toll on a brave and tired Reeds team – so a few of the Abbey boys agreed to join them and immediate made an impact. Ill-discipline amongst the Abbey team led to two late tries for Reeds and one closing effort from Abbey – final score 9-3.

Thanks to Luke / Josh S / Billy / Teddy for stepping in to play for Reeds.

All in all, a powerful efficient display by the squad – great to see the straightening running lines and expansive passing which punch holes; we’ll focus further on body position in ruck/maul situations in next training sessions.
