Abbey U13s “A Game of Two Halves” vs Oxford Quins
'Goose' scores two golden eggs
Abbey U13s for once were first out of the blocks to win a tough match vs Oxford Quins.
On the first cold morning of the season, the boys were dominant from the start - a first this season.. An impressive combination of physical rucking with the breakdown, aggressive defence then strong carries punched holes won territory. Then some flowing moves beat a stretched defence through-out the first half.
Highlights were Archie and Matty scoring tries in breaking tacklers and showing a clean pair of heals to the cover defence and Luke scoring his first of the season from a team effort after a number of phases creating the overlap. Other tries by Jake / Angus / Flynn
Abbey brought on a few fresh legs across the team as they turned to face the wind. The half-time talk by the Oxford coaches had a great impact on their team - with a renewed energy at the breakdown. Abbey opened proceedings to make it 7-0, with a solo effort by Angus (Goose) using a deft chip over an advancing defence and then pick up. At this point, Oxford turned the screw, dominated the breakdown and camped in Abbey's half for long periods. This was mostly met by heroics in the Abbey defence - but the Oxford team worked hard to score 4 forwards tries in the last quarter.
Congrats to Harley on his debut at lock
Matty was named 'Man of the Match' for his excellent work in 1st half at the breakdown and barn-storming run for this try
