Abbey U15's dig deep

A great Team effort

The final result was 7-0 to Abbey and to have no score in the second half was actually a credit to the defence of both teams, but particularly the Abbey boys. It was the best defensive performance to date by the team and all the coaches agreed – Abbey were rarely in opposition territory during the second half. The team will have learnt from the game and it was far more satisfying than delivering a 30-0 walkover. Marlborough were strong, tackled well and were good at the breakdown. However, there has been a noticeable change in our confidence levels and this is derived in part from the boys’ ability to carry out the various training drills during the game. They are skilful and just need to ‘keep the (grebo’s) faith’.

It was the motivation and will to win that was most pleasing – this was a real team effort from all 18 players and Abbey would not have hung on to win this game at the start of the season. Several players received knocks and they had to change positions to accommodate and allow individuals to recover. For the last 30 minutes, Abbey were under constant pressure and held the ball up over their own line 3 times.

Abbey also put Marlborough under a lot of pressure and the line speed of the Abbey backs forced them into a series of errors and denied them more scoring opportunities. Abbeys ability to break-out on a couple of occasions, nearly resulted in further tries and the speed of the handling was commented on by the opposition spectators. The Abbey forwards showed a lot of fight, (sometimes too literally) and we learnt another valuable lesson. In close games, there will be niggle and going down to 14 players could mean the loss of the game. While difficult when the blood is rising, it is always better to turn away and let the opposition suffer from their actions. The pack more than held their own and the level of intensity and effort shown by all was as step up from previous games.

Everyone associated with the team should feel very proud of the boys. It really was a fantastic effort
