Abbey girls win first away match
First ever away match against Reading won comfortably then a narrow defeat to Newbury
Abbey girls travelled to Newbury RFC to play a round robin of matches with Newbury Girls and Reading girls. 17 girls travelled down the M4 to Monks Lane: Louise De La Harpe, Amy De La Harpe, Katherine Askin, Katy Simmons, Jasmine Hooper, Charlotte Trussler, Sophia Wisely, Emily Parr, Sophie Smith, Laura Burley, Caitlin Price, Sophie Smith, Eleanor Pearson, Grace Johnson, Kara Kirton, Aysha and Lulu.
Reading brought 7 girls and Newbury had 9 so a joint training session of 33 girls was held where they worked on passing drills and 2-on-1 situations.
The first match was Abbey A against Reading. Louise kicked off and it was game on. Abbey secured the ball and started to make their way up the pitch, but were tested by Reading's well organised defence. However only a few minutes had gone before a well worked offload from Lulu to Louise enabled Louise to make a good run through a gap and score the first try. Heads were then up and the Abbey defence remained solid, showing how much work the girls have put into keeping their line this season. Grace had some great runs up the wing but the Reading winger did some great defensive bundling her into touch. Katherine and Sophie worked well together as centres, not letting one Reading girl past them. emily Parr then got her hands on the ball and ran up the centre of the pitch but the seventh touch tackle was made and it was ball to Reading. Once again Abbey's defence was tested but remained soild and we quickly regained possession. The whistle blew for half time and it was 5-0.
The second half started as strongly as the first with Grace making an impressive catch from kick off. Our new player Jasmine was on for Sophie and for her first game she did some excellent support work and put in some great tackles. Abbey moved up the pitch in phases, starting to offload before tackleswere made, enabling Sophia to cross the line for our second try 10-0. Reading then clawed back a try through great attacking work 10-5.
The game was coming to a close and Grace almost reached the line before being bundled into touch. Abbey stole the ball from a Reading lineout and crossed the line again 15-5 final score.
