Abbey III's v Wallingford II's
Abbey rue missed opportunities
Taking advice from an Irish weather man is never a good thing - but despite the 'slightly chilly' state of Abbey's pitch it was decided (after much deliberation) that the game should go ahead.
With all the other games cancelled what else were we going to do...shopping, time with wives and girlfriends...I think not.
The brutal conditions were replicated by the brutality of the game...relentless from both sides. The visitors made sure their physicality was felt and the home side showed some superb defensive to repel repeated waves of hard running Wallingford forwards.
But Abbey's is a running game and when we finally got our hands on the ball we made it count. Matt (Farrier aka Gypsy aka Nick) Seabourne making sure Dominic (Stallion) Howard was there in spirit with a superb Dom like try...showing brilliant pace and muscle to run in from 40 metres. 'Nick' showed great awareness and composure during another break to offload to Tom 'you are' Hogan to showcase his finishing ability...a sharp couple of weeks in training resulted in a pacey and polished finished from the Ginger Minger. Matt 'loves a horse' Seabourne got his second soon afterwards on his first start for the 3's.
But the visitors got a try back just before half time...a relentless and what felt like eternal battering of Abbey's line finally found a hole and they crashed over...but Abbey had made them really work for it, repeatedly putting bodies on the line to hold them out.
The second half was an all together different affair. Abbey just couldn't get their hands on the ball. Wallingford completely changed their game plan at half time, kept the ball tight in their pack and used their driving maul and scrum well. Another two close range tries soon followed.
Unfortunately Abbey's three conversions weren't recorded which resulted in the final score being given as 19-19 as opposed to an 21-19 Abbey win.
Regardless both sides fronted up and made the best of the conditions...a proper game of rugby and Wallingford knew they'd been in some game.
Next up is top of the table Bicester this Saturday. Abbey currently lie second in the table and remain the only side who've beaten Bicester this season.
Dom 'the 5 try destroyer' Howard is coming for you again.
