BUCKINGHAM 17 READING 24 S COUNTIES SOUTH 24 03 18

BUCKINGHAM 17 READING 24 S COUNTIES SOUTH 24 03 18
Reading’s best performance away from home for three years saw them hold on for a well merited win against Buckingham, second in the league. Their previous one, in March 2015, was also against Buckingham, a game which was won 41-19.
Much has changed since those days, however. Buckingham were relegated that season and Reading the next and Buckingham have shown encouraging signs of re-building this year, currently lying in second place and pushing for promotion. Reading by contrast have struggled, maintaining a place just below half way in the league. Before this game they had won just one of their last six matches.
To make matters more difficult Reading had to play Sam Bowers, normally a fly half and out of the team since October, at scrum half with occasional fly half Alex Murray-Smith outside him.
Yet Reading scored the first try, in the 23rd minute, as winger Chris Greig took advantage of good possession from a scrum to outrun his opponents to the line. Buckingham responded as expected. They showed skill, energy and pace as they attacked Reading at every opportunity. Before long they put together a good driving move which ended in centre Matt Hawker crashing over. Ed Kinman’s conversion gave them the lead. More was to follow as, with Josh Pallet and Alex Dorliac replaced after injury, the home forwards drove over for another try.
12-5 down at half time Reading went close as James Mitchell’s run nearly put Chris Greig away. It was the home team who scored next, however as lock forward Matt London touched down.
5-17 down after 50 minutes Reading were facing defeat. Yet they came storming back with some clever play . First fly half Murray-Smith’s well placed cross kick was well taken by winger Ben Mitchell for a try, converted by Bowers. Then, three minutes later, a Reading clearance from deep was touched by a Buckingham player, putting Reading hooker, Steve King, onside and able to run with the ball, leading to another try for Chris Greig. All of a sudden 5-17 had become 17-17 and Reading were on a roll.
Before long Reading found themselves with an attacking lineout, followed by a five metre scrum. The pressure eventually told and replacement Number 8 Adam Veale used his strength to drive over. Bowers’ conversion was the final score of the game, although it took some determined defending by Reading to keep the home team at bay. Buckingham did manage to get over the try line once but were rightly brought back by the Buckingham touch judge for a foot in touch.
Reading Head Coach Ben Wills was delighted with his team. “That was the best performance since I have been here. You really stepped up to the plate and we kept our discipline well” he told them. He also praised the performance of the whole pack, who dominated the scrums, Jos Clarke in the centre and fly half Alex Murray-Smith. Biggest praise, however, went to Reading Man-of-the Match Sam Bowers, who served his fly half well and whose kicking always put his side on the front foot.
