Round 1: Rebels vs Swans Game Wrap-Up

Read to see how the Rebels fared against the Swans in this Round 1 Clash!

Winter is over and the weather actually is surprisingly warm. I remember a couple of years back where you would still get snowfall and some freezing rain for Round 1, that aside this is Fantastic weather for Footy and it’s that time of year again where the teams of the AFLO come to collide after a long pre-season of training to show other clubs what their hard work and dedication produced.

The Rebels took to the field to face the Ottawa Swans for Round 1 of the AFLO Division 1 Competition. The lead up to this game has been a long one with the Rebels focussing primarily on their Fitness in trainings and it proved to pay off this day.

From the moment the Rebels started to get dressed you could feel the excitement in the air and they made sure to make every minute before the game count by talking strategy, positioning, key elements to the game and a having nice long warm-up to get them prepared. As I watched them train I came to realise that this is one of the biggest squads I’ve ever seen the Rebels field, with a mix of Veterans’ and Rookies ready to show the league things will be different this year. Before you knew it the Siren sounded and it was time to start. Round 1 had finally kicked off for the Rebels and it couldn’t have happened on a better day.

The first center bounce went to the Swans who quickly moved it to the forward lines, my first initial thoughts were “please do not let this be a sign of things to come” and it wasn’t. As quickly as it got down there the Rebels managed to push the ball to our forward line but they seemed to struggle to get it off the ground. This scenario would set the pace for the first quarter for the Rebels with the Swannies getting their first Goal from a long punt that would bounce over the line. Not the way the Rebels had wished their first quarter of their 2012 Campaign would go but they were still determined and not ready to give up, everyone had worked too hard in the preseason and a WIN was a must.

The second seemed to be very similar to the first but this time, the persistence seemed to pay off. In this quarter the Rebels showed they’re fitness prowess by getting two goals and 5 behinds. Before you knew it, the half time siren played and the Rebels gathered together to review the first half. Now in the lead by 6 points the Rebels were deciding the best way they can keep their lead and expand on it.

The Second half saw a bit of shuffling around on positions with the big Left Footer Morgan King being moved to the front and Kev Duffy taking his spot in the middle. This looked to be the shakeup they needed as the forward line seemed to finally come together with the Rebels increasing their Goal tally by 2 but unfortunately this also saw the Swans making a ferocious comeback and taking the lead by the end of the 3rd by 3 points.

The 4th quarter had to be the most exciting quarter of Footy I’ve see the Rebels produce in a long time. They took to the field with one thing on their Mind “WIN”, with only a 3 point differential this was easily in their grasp. The beginning of the 4th saw the Ball spending most of its time in the Rebels forward line, the Swannies trying to counteract this stacked their backline to try and prevent the Rebels from Scoring and then in a Blink of an Eye the Rebels score a goal and take back the lead and then a second and a third! Where did this come from? All of a sudden things seem to finally work and the Rebels had their flow and momentum to seal it and get the big W! In this last quarter the Rebels really showed that all those pushups/situps/run-throughs had payed off, they dug deep and proved to the league what their made of. The Rebels got their first win of the Season and celebrated with an Open Esky provided by the Club.

The Game ended with the final score tally being:
Rebels – 7-10-52
Swans – 4-9-33

Bests – King, Stark, Fabbri, Duffy, Brand, Bansley

Congratulations to David Bansley (Pup), Michael Sheedy (Sheeds), Jake MacDonald (Jakey) for Playing their First AFL game in Canada. Hope you enjoyed it as you all did well and showed Promise!
