With both defences on the top of their game chances were few and far between and most of the early play was condensed to the middle third. As the game began to open up the visitors had the first real chance of any note, on 25mins, when Kevin McLeod had a close range shot blocked and Julian Edwards blasted the richochet outrageously wide.

On 35mins, Steve Cawley and goal keeper David McCartney challenged for a well delivered Louis Bristow free kick. Cawley got the better of the keeper but had what would have been his first goal chalked out for an apparent foul. Almost immediately, The Motormen broke and, from just inside the box, McLeod's shot struck the inside of the post. Just before the break Keiran Ogunkoya hit the side netting from an acute angle.

A couple of minutes shy of the hour mark Ogunkoya notched his third goal in consecutive games. Having made some space in the area his initial shot was palmed back into his path by McCartney and he made no mistake with the second attempt as he shot coolly into the far corner. Ogunkoya was in the thick of the action a few minutes later when he fed Cawley whose drive was tipped over by McCartney and, from the subsequent corner, he headed over. Within seconds, Cawley turned the covering defender with ease but his swirling shot from the corner of the area cleared the bar.

During the final 15 minutes Redbridge pinned The Abbotts back for long periods in their effort to salvage at least a point. Alex Read powered past Ayres but Harry Ricketts waited until the last possible moment before diving bravely at his feet to keep his goal intact. Minutes after a McLeod drive was just wide of the mark Ricketts was in action again to deny Read and, right near the death, Ayres got in on the act to also deny Read as he was about to pounce.
