'What’s Not To Like About Following The Reds At The Moment'.

Unbeaten in six games, a third straight win, free-scoring strikers and a rock solid defence – what’s not to like about following the Reds at the moment.

A trip to storm-ravaged Banbury on a Tuesday was always going to test the mettle of Darren Byfield’s young side but not only did they stand up to everything the weather and home side could throw at them, they also produced some of their best football of the season.

Put simply, the Reds were in a different class in the first half. They scored two and it could easily have been more with strike pair Dior Angus and Spencer Weir-Daley tormenting the Banbury defence.

Andi Thanoj and Angus went close before the latter forced an excellent save from Jack Harding who dived full-length to push a shot around the post for a corner.

Redditch’s relentless pressure was finally rewarded on 24 minutes when Angus bagged his seventh goal of the season, creating the space 25 yards out before curling the ball out of reach of Harding’s dive.

Thanoj and Danny Jackman were excellent in the centre of the park but it was the excellent Nathan Fox who set-up the visitors’ second on 31 minutes with a peach of a cross from the left flank which picked out Weir-Daley who sneaked in between Banbury’s towering defenders to head home.

There could have been a third just before the break when Thanoj fed Weir-Daley but this time his shot flew just the wrong side of the target.

Banbury had offered nothing before the break but with the strength of the wind increasing, they had an extra advantage in the second half. And when the ball was floated into the Reds area, Ricky Johnson got in behind the visiting defence only to lift his shot over the target.

Both sides struggled with the conditions but central defenders Orrin Pendley and Gui Mailancol coped brilliantly with the onslaught as the hosts looked for a way back into the game.

Instead it was Redditch who added to the scoreline 15 minutes from time. Substitute Danico Johnson had only been on the field a coupe of minutes but that was enough to net his first of the season, a low drive from the edge of the area following a neat lay-off from Angus.

Jefferson Louis had the ball in the net on 85 minutes only to have his effort chalked out for offside but he made amends with an injury time consolation when he turned in a Ravi Shamsi free-kick.

While the manager will be disappointed not to have kept a clean sheet, the real negative on the night was an injury to Kevin Monteiro that saw him carried off on a stretcher early in the second half.
