Coaching Matters

If you are helping out or taking an active role coaching and you are thinking about taking your skills to a different level the following is a basic idea what RFU course to choose and what to expect from them.

At an entry level coaching U6’s through to U8’s there are a number of non award and award courses available.

1. Start Coaching Rugby. This course concentrates on Coaching children playing the game at a Tag level(Under 6-8) The course usually only lasts a couple of hours and is predominantly game and fun orientated.(The cost of this course is £21 +vat)


2. IRB Rugby Ready. This course is a prerequisite of any RFU award course; this includes UKCC Level 1 and UKCC Level 2. As with the previous course it only takes a couple of hours and gives an insight into any up and coming Level 1 and 2 courses and what to expect. There are some games and drills involved but only as a means to demonstrate the type of drills covered within the Level 1 and 2 programmes. (The cost of this course is £18 +vat)


3. UKCC Level 1. This course takes place usually over 3 or 4 days. You will have to take an online RFU exam first before completing the course itself. The course deals with coaching younger players playing in the contact arena. (The cost is £100 + vat)


4. Scrum Factory. As the name suggest this course concentrates coaching safe, effective and quality scrimmaging. The course is a prerequisite of any UKCC Level 2 course.


5. UKCC Level 2. This course is intended for coaches Coaching at 15 A Side level. You must previously complete the Rugby Ready and Scrum Factory before embarking on this programme.


As with any RFU award course, there are a number of CPD modules available which again deal with various aspect of the games both on and off the pitch. Progression through the coaching hierarchy will be dependent on the successful completion of those modules most appropriate to the level you coach.
