On a beautiful summer day the mighty Ensians arrived at the posh leafy location of Weybridge. The pitch was in excellent condition and we played in our own wooded environment separate from
We agreed with Reeds to play 3 X 20 minute matches instead of 2 X 30. From the outset we piled on the pressure with great work from the scrum and also good chasing from the backs.
Ryani n particular was on rampaging form. Despite intense pressure we just could not get over their line. However we were awarded a penalty and decided to go for the 3 points.
James D struck the ball sweetly but unfortunately hit the post and the ball came back.
Although Reeds looked also bigger than us, our tackling was first class and our usual reliant tacklers ( Rory, Tom and Joe ) were supported by everybody this time.
It was also great to see the backs pass the ball down the line and actually use the flying Frankie on the wing. The backs midfield of Connor, Charlie, Joe and Sam really communicated well.
Anyway the score ended 0-0 after first 20 mins.
In the second 20 mins we got off to a rather slow start where Reeds scored an early try due to our only instant of really poor tackling ( 4 boys missed the try scorer ). Reeds also put the kick over from out wide and we were 7-0 down.
At this point our heads could have fallen, but the scrum in particular re=grouped and we ended up again camping in the Reeds half. We had some strong work in the line out and our rucking really began to improve ( strong contributions from Scott, Hamish, Ben A ) and some great ball carrying from Tom P and Ben K ) . Harry also put some accurate throws in from the line out. Keane was particularly strong in the mauls and got us some great ball.
Despite the pressure and some great running from Frankie and James D we just could not cross the line. Again having put them under pressure we forced another penalty. This time Jame’s D sweetly struck penalty went straight through the middle of the posts.
We ended the second 20 mins 7-3 down.
Now in the last 20 mins our superior fitness took over and we again camped in their half. Dan W on the wing was playing his best ever game of rugby with some great tackling and strong runs.
Dan B as captain for the first time was really communicating and taking some good decisions when the ball came back. At last another back line move got the ball to James D, who had 30metres to go.
We all shouted at him to pass out wide but he knew better and kept going and with great determination crossed the line ( a great try ). Unfortunately he narrowly missed the conversion and we led by 0ne point. Iwan played the last 20 mins and made a couple of great tackles.
Despite the referee extending the 20 mins a little more, Reeds never looked like scoring and we closed out a great narrow victory.
In particular it was great to see the newcomers contributing – well done Scott, Hamish, Callum, Charlie and Sam.
The man of match was quite rightly James Dias and he also proudly represented the club in the drink off ( another victory !).
Well done to all the boys on the dress code and even the coaches looked smart. The Reeds Head Coach complimented our team on the way we played rugby and the excellent spirit of the match.
He also said that we were a very smart, organised group.
Last but not least it was great to see Jack and Kieran who in spite of their injuries came to support us.
