RFU National - National League 3 South West
| Newbury Blues | 6 | vs | 46 | Redingensians |
Rams add to Newbury's blues
Will Clarke scored against his former club as the Rams swept aside National 3 South West strugglers Newbury Blues at Monk’s Lane.
He was one of eight men on the try sheet as the Sonning men’s superior forward power proved too much for a side still seeking their first victory of the season.
The margin of success could have been even greater but for a host of chances squandered by the promotion hopefuls, who remain third five points behind Chinnor.
Rams head coach Mike Tewksbury admitted: “Although we wasted scoring opportunities, it was a convincing win in the end. But we can’t make mistakes like this against the better sides.”
“I thought we created a lot and consistently breached the gain line however we just weren’t clinical enough.“
A try from number eight Connor Stapley opened the Rams’ scoring in the fourth minute for Shaun Brown to add the extras.
Oscar Matthews kicked a penalty for the Blues but young Dom Gosling was on hand to cross in the corner following a 30 yard rolling maul build-up.
On the other wing, new signing Mark Odejobi saw little of the ball and once again Matthews landed a kick as the home side battled bravely.
But Gensians sealed a try bonus point and virtual victory with tries from Seb Reynolds - after a strike against the head - then Azza Hopkins, Brown adding a conversion.
With a 24-6 interval lead, Rams came out fired up and with the line at their mercy twice missed out through forward passes.
More ball on a Newbury put-in led to a Brown break which set up skipper Aaron Hopkins for a converted try.
Genssians made a triple substitution and soon replacement Rob Stapley finished off a catch and drive.
Clarke came into the line wide out for touchdown No 7 before Jez Flynn scored in the corner following a burst by Gosling.
Men of the match - big lock Mike Turner, a tireless in a dominant pack, and winger Dom Gosling.
W Clarke; Gosling, Reynolds (Flynn 54), Aaron Hopkins, Obejobi; Brown, Raitt; Rumble, M Clarke (Fisher 54), Root, Turner, Amor (R Stapley 54), Azza Hopkins, C Stapley.
