Wimbledon Ballot - Opt-in Statement from the LTA

Ballot Opt In Statement

We would like to apologise for any confusion created around the new ‘opt in’ process for the LTA Wimbledon ballot.
The purpose of introducing ‘opt in’ was to bring greater transparency to the ballot process, and by ensuring the allocation of tickets is based on true club membership numbers and not unsubstantiated figures, it means that those people truly interested in attending The Championships are given the best possible opportunity to receive an offer.

We would also like to re-affirm that the introduction of ‘opt in’ was not a move to reduce the number of tickets available to our members. The total allocation remains unchanged from 2014. Ultimately, we want BTM to be valued by our customers, and to provide a more personalised offering linked to what they want.
However through this process we have now found ourselves in a situation where our BTM database isn't as accurate as we believed.

As a result of this year’s ballot process, we have discovered instances where uploaded data is incorrect, and information has not been validated. In order to address this problem, we established ‘opt in’ as a mechanism to cleanse the data. In theory, this should have provided a simple solution; however, in reality we are faced with a large number of people who are struggling to opt in for various reasons including:

  • They signed up to BTM several years ago and have no recollection of username and password
  • They were signed up through the bulk upload process completed by their club and as a result incorrect data was inputted or has since become outdated
  • Have limited understanding of BTM and assumed that being a member of their club gave them access to the ballot

All of this has made it difficult for individuals with a desire to attend The Championships to ‘opt in’ online, and give themselves the opportunity to benefit from an offer through their venue's ballot.
The impact of this has meant our Services Team has been stretched beyond capacity, and the level of service we are used to providing our members has been affected. We also experienced a number of technical outages from Monday 19th - Wednesday 21st January, which resulted in our website being unavailable. Whilst we recognise this is not an excuse, we wanted to highlight the reasons for a drop in the level of service and can only apologise for any inconvenience caused.

For the remainder of the Ballot opt in period, we have increased the size of our Services Team to better deal with the increased volume of queries.
