REMYCA Narrowly lose out at fellow newcomers, Barnton

MATCH REPORT - by Don Rimmer

It was another landmark for REMYCA as they visited mid-Cheshire to take on Barnton for the first time on Saturday. The Cheshire side are also newcomers to the North West Counties scene and after a slow start have began to gain results currently standing at sixth place in the division. Their profile has been raised recently in that they boast ex Swansea and Brighton professional Leon Knight as part of the playing and coaching squad.

On a sloping pitch, REMYCA kicked up hill for the first half and with a swirling wind it was difficult to get the ball down and play. Gradually midfield pair Robert Madine and Karl Siadankay began to assert control and with the left sided pairing of Jamie Simm and Louis Austin combining well REMYCA took the game to Barnton at every early opportunity.

Litherland's first real chance came on 20 minutes a cross from the right by Daniel Duffy was met square on by centre back David Flynn who headed the ball down only to see it bounce and graze the cross bar, this was a chance missed and Barnton continued to counter-attack Litherland Remyca at every opportunity as they pushed on in search of the first goal. The game as a spectacle was not helped by a number of constant stoppages for what many viewed as trivial matters, the game pace lacked fluidity at times. The majority of play had been condensed in mid field in what was becoming a competitive and hard encounter. Despite some continuous attacking play from both sides it remained all square at the half time interval without either keeper being stretched.

As Litherland REMYCA kicked off for the second half the ball was needlessly given away and shifted forward to Barnton midfielder Jake Ellis, his speculative strike from 25 yards took a deflection past debutant keeper Sean Lake to nestle in the bottom corner just on a minute into the second half.

As REMYCA went in search of an equaliser they lost composure and despite still dominating play resorted to playing long balls down the slope which were either over hit or easily defended by the Barnton rear-guard, this was to the frustration of the Litherland dugout and manager, Phil Stafford who's call for clear heads was heeded by the player's who re-grouped and continued to take the play to the home side. The game remained in the Barnton half as Remy pushed on seeking to secure the elusive goal. A Colin McDonald header hit the crossbar and a powerful Dean Siadankey header was cleared off the line by the Barnton defence but despite the domination of play REMYCA failed to find a way through .

This was a game REMYCA deserved to gain at least a point but their play in the final third in the second half lacked a cutting edge. Nevertheless taking the positives the side is already more competitive, running top six side close and they have a chance to bounce back with a midweek fixture against Northwich Flixton Villa scheduled for Wednesday (29th October), a club that holds positive memories for Litherland as they were the side they beat to record their first North West Counties League win back in August with a 2-1 home victory.
