Men of the Match: The Whole Team

Retford United Under 11s finished their season in style with a sixteen goal blitz of Edenthorpe Juniors that resulted in Retford finishing fifth in the League.. The game was played at Cannon Park as a treat for the lads and Edenthorpe were unlucky to come up against a Retford team that had eventually learnt how to use the space on a large pitch by passing the ball.

Retford took the lead after 5 minutes when Ryan Wright crossed the ball from the left to Luke Woodward who sidefooted the ball past the keeper. Luke then had a shot cleared off the line and Callum Jones hit a shot over the bar. Liam Bland made it 2-0 after 10 minutes when he chipped the ball over the keeper’s head from the edge of the area. He repeated this trick a few minutes later to make it 3-0. On 18 minutes, Ryan laid a ball off to Matthew Shaw who shot past the keeper with his left foot to make it 4-0. Ryan broke through himself to score. His initial shot was saved but Ryan followed up to make it 5-0. Matthew then played a ball through the middle for Ryan to run on to and slot past the keeper for 6-0 which was the score at half time.

Retford scored their seventh goal a few minutes into the second half. Henry Wilson’s corner fell to William Varley who crashed a shot against the crossbar but Josh Sharpe was on hand to fire the rebound into the roof of the net. Henry then played the ball to Nathan Reah on the left who beat the Edenthorpe defenders for pace before cutting inside and chipping the ball over the keeper for 8-0. Nathan quickly made it 9-0 after a good pass by Luke. Henry then crossed from the right for Luke to score and make it 10-0 after 37 minutes. A minute later, Henry and Matthew combined to play Nathan in again on the left and Nathan raced through to seal his hat-trick. Good passing by Jacob Baines on the right found Peter Voase in space and his cross found Nathan in the middle to score and make it 12-0. Luke had two one on one chances with the Edenthorpe keeper but the keeper made two excellent saves. Nathan scored his fifth goal after some good passing by Hari Singh. Henry Wilson then played the ball through for Matthew to round the keeper and slot the ball into an empty net for 14-0. Nathan scored his sixth goal after 50 minutes after a good ball by Henry. The scoring was finally finished off by Liam after good passing between Nathan and Matthew on the left allowed Matthew to cross to Liam who knocked it home for his hat-trick and for a final score of 16-0. Well done to Edenthorpe Juniors who never gave up and who continued to battle throughout the game.
