Woodbeck Diagonals 1 v 5 Retford United
The Badgers U19s opened their pre-season schedule with a comfortable run out in near tropical conditions in the shadows of Rampton Hospital. Despite two days of sunshine the ground was still very wet in places meaning heavy legs for a United side just two weeks into pre-season.
Retford were without a recognised centre forward for this game and so reverted to a Spanish style 4-2-3-1 with Bobby Johnson moved into the Fabregas role as the Badgers started with six midfielders.
By half time they had the game put to bed Joel Marson lofting the ball over the centre half for Bobby Johnson to hit a stunning volley to give Retford the lead. Johnson doubled the advantage soon after as he raced clear to slot home despite the keeper getting a hand on the ball.
Kyle Shephard slipped a great ball into the path of Adam Ellis who raced through to make the score 3-0. Ellis then missed a penalty after Jacob Brammer had been felled in the area with some good footwork.
At the other end Rob Cummins got behind the back four to briefly threaten the Badgers goal but his shot was well over as Jack Aldred
raced from his line to close him down.
With a 3-0 lead Rich Williams and Adam Scott shuffled things about a bit in the 2nd half MICHAEL HASLAM the second midfielder to fill the striker’s role added his name to the score sheet with a classy finish chipping the keeper from 25 yards after more good work from Marson.
The changes to the personnel as legs tired saw Retford grow tired and sloppy in the latter stages and ironically Sam Hutchinson a member of the United squad playing for the opposition got free to pull one back with a superb finish from just inside the box five minutes from time.
Hutchinson got free of a tired looking Retford back line again but Aldred was in no mood to be beaten for a second time and made a fine save low at the forward’s feet.
Kyle Shephard rounded off the scoring with the best goal of the match when he ran from his own half beating two players before unleashing an unstoppable left footed drive into the roof of the net from 30 yards.
A huge thank-you to the couple that follow the first team home and away for attending the game today and showing your support for the lads. Much appreciated and we hope to see you at many more games in the future.
