“Thank you all for organising such an amazing day in memory of our dad!”
Billy Woods Touch Tournament
The annual Corstorphine touch tournament took place over the weekend. The event is dedicated to Billy Wood, a long serving member and friend of Corstorphine Rugby Club and I'm sure he would be so proud of the day - seeing such a high calibre grace the grass of Union Park along with so many supporters and volunteers down to take part.
This year saw entries from 13 teams of all ages and abilities. That said, the level was much higher than our organisers gave credit to and we are already thinking of making changes to incorporate all abilities for next year.
We aim to make this the biggest and most sought after club touch tournament in Scotland and I don't think we can be far away from that reality. We have had support from our neighbouring West Edinburgh clubs, Forrester, Queensferry and Currie and had some fantastic support all the way from Keswick, England!
Although peppered with a touch of rain, our spirits weren't damped and the stats speak for themselves
392 mins of rugby
LFEA who are loosely associated with Currie RFC and a social team, beat the defending champions - Brown Trouts in what was a wet affair and one of the most entertaining of the days. Well played LFEA. Looking forward to your return next year.
The final was only pipped by the event that preceded it...the (unofficial) Corwick Cup. This attracted nearly every spectator out the bar and proved to be an exciting curtain raiser. Fantastic to see Corstorphine taking the honours in the first of many more to come.
Billy's daughters, Nicola and Joanne, commented "Thank you all for organising such an amazing day in memory of our dad! He would have been the biggest fan of the whole event." and "Yes - what you said Nic!!! A great day, indeed. Great job all those involved. Dad would have loved it. "
Big thanks to all who made the day fantastic - supporters, players, volunteers and referees. Especially big thanks to the Woods family who came and presented LFEA with their trophy.
The off-season can be a droll time for anyone who is associated with amateur sports...unless of course you are involved in Corstorphine Cougars.
With events such as the 3 Lions Breakfasts and Billy Woods Touch Tournament, coupled with a couple of members-functions, the club have managed to have their most successful off-season in a long time.
Our rewards go directly into the club and we are striving to make improvements to the facilities, equipment, rugby resources and back room. With recent improvements including the painting of the club and the installation of the disabled toilet, July has also been a very busy month.
Off the field, we are investing in Level 3 coaching for both the Women's and Men's senior teams and minis coaches will shortly be doing the same. Everything shaping up nicely for 2017/18 season.
An enormous thank you goes out to all the support for the best start to the season we could have. Onwards to August
You'll have seen our recent post on the fantastic news that Getaway Sailing Ltd as the new main sponsors of both men's and ladies teams.
The firm is the no. 1 for sailing excursions for all ages in Greece and Croatia and are delighted to be supporting the club at this time. There will be some promotional material at the club later in the season if you fancy booking a different fun holiday for next summer.
We are also pleased to confirm Genting Casinos, OS11, Pegasus Investigations and John White and Sons as our other strip and short sponsors for the new season. We're also grateful for continued support from Towergate and Bespoke Liners as well as others.
For those who were not at the EGM, our sponsors will be proudly displayed on our new red and blue quartered strips which were well received by all - news on the new kit coming soon!
Our sponsors support is gratefully received and we hope that all members help us to build successful partnerships with our sponsors over the coming months as we seek to build a community in union.
Women's Come & Try Session
You might have noticed our Women's team have been going from strength to strength over the past wee while and on the back of the fantastic news that Level 3 Coach Eric Jones has taken the helm they'll also be hosting a "Come & Try" Session.
This is for any women who fancy having a go at rugby and we'd be grateful if members could spread the word. Please also like and share posts on Facebook - it helps promote our teams to a wider audience and gives our sponsors a wee boost as well!
The session will take place on Tue 8th August at Union Park from 19:00.
