U14s try-fest

Tackling optional as Penallta and Rhiwbina U14s serve up a 17 try try-fest in the sun!

Penallta 57 Rhiwbina 46

Tries: Tom Mably (x2), Jacob Garrett-Evans (x2), Jasper Pinkard, Owen Lane (x2) and Sam Randell.
Con: Dan Pike (x2)

The last time we met was in the mud and rain when Penallta handed us a 44-12 hammering.
Swop the mud and rain for glorious sunshine and a firm pitch and it seemed like Penallta were carrying on where they left off last time.

To coin a phrase, Rhiwbina "hadn't got off the bus" and within 15 mins found themselves 28-0 down and staring into the abyss of another hammering at the hands of Penallta.

The Squirrels couldn't handle the power and pace of the Penallta centre. Time and again the first up tackle was missed allowing the Pitmen to get up a head of steam and Rhiwbina would face yet another conversion under the posts.

On the 18th minute Rhiwbina managed to get good field position for Tom Mably to cross. Two more quick fire tries by Jacob Garrett-Evans and Jasper Pinkard gave a 28-17 scoreline and the Squirrels the belief they could get something out of the game.

Just before half-time an unsavoury incident saw Jasper leave the field with an injury to his ribs (and a yellow card) plus a yellow card to a Penallta player.

HT 28-17

Straight from the kickoff Penallta extended their lead with with a converted try but Owen Lane hit straight back with a try of his own. 35-22

Penallta added another 2 tries but Jacob responded with his second try. 49-27

Mabs crossed for his second, Penallta added their 9th try and Owen crossed, then Sam for Rhiwbina's 8th try to give a final score of 57-46.

Hard to believe that Rhiwbina would come so close after being blown away in the first 15 minutes of the game. Some of the conversions were drop goal attempts instead of waiting for the tee which could have pushed the score closer.

Both sets of coaches will be pleased with their respective attacking ability but also concerned that so many first up tackles were missed allowing such a try-fest to ensue.

Many thanks to Penallta for an entertaining game. One incident did spoil it but credit must go to both sets of boys for putting it behind them and going on to play without any further shenanigens.

Rhiwbina U14s would like to send their best wishes to the Penallta lad who had to go off and to hospital in the first half, and to Jasper and Hoppo who also picked up injuries throughout this bruising encounter.
