Men's 1s Secure 3 Well Deserved Points At Cheshunt
By MOTM ---- Matt Stray
The game started very positively for Ricky 1s as good pressure was applied against the opposition straight from the off. As ever, Will Pendered and George Mason combined well in midfield in attempt to assist the forward duo of Matt Stray and Tom West, however the final shot continued to go begging either being blocked, missed or not taken. The opposition’s midfield was strong, managing to play their captain and forward through on goal many times forcing some great saves from Ricky’s keeper Greg Moore. Unfortunately for Ricky 1s the opposition’s forward capitalised on one of these chances and scored with 5 minutes to go before half time to open the scoring with 1-0 Cheshunt 2s.
It was clear at half time that something needed to change in the Ricky 1s play to score some goals. Welshy and John O’Farrell provided a clear message to the team to take more shots and to challenge the keeper. An inspired Ricky 1s team then went back out to try and change the score of the match.
The second half started extremely well for Ricky 1s after some fantastic play from George Mason, Sebastian and Will Pendered which led to a Ricky short corner. The short corner was cleared as the ball found its way to Tom West who brought it inside and managed to flick the ball past the keeper at his near post to make the score level at 1-1. A driven Ricky 1s side then scored a second with a pass to the top of the D to George Mason who swept the ball into the goal to take Ricky 1s into the lead at 2-1. However, 10 minutes later the opposition were awarded a short corner that the Ricky defence was unlucky to concede making the score yet again level at 2-2. Ricky 1s kept their heads up and a skilful run from Matt Stray into the D led to again another short corner for Ricky 1s. This time Jeff Unger found the ball and with good resiliency put the ball past the keeper for Ricky to take the lead again at 3-2. Ricky 1s secured the win with a 4th goal thanks to Tom West catching the opposition defender by surprise at their 16 hit out, tacking the defender and passing it to Jeff Unger with a open goal he calmly put the ball in. The Ricky 1s defence with the likes of Andy Bates, Andy Moore and Welshy were very solid keeping the the score at a good win for the team.
A fantastic display by everyone in the Ricky 1s team today adding to their win streak. It was hard to pick out a Man Of The Match today however Matt Stray was given the honour for great running and energy consistently throughout the game. DOTD ,to keep it child friendly, wasn’t deserved by anyone however the group decided to award it to Tom West for somehow managing to hit the ball over the fence right in front of the goal during the warm up. There was a comical vote for “Sanjay” by John O’Farrell which amused himself and Welshy before explaining the joke to the rest of the team. The largest fan turnout this season with ex player and founding member Kenneth Moore as he watched his beloved club win 4-2 against Cheshunt 2s.
